Alright guys, I am having trouble with my best friend... He hasn't talked to me at all in the past few days since I last saw him at guitar lessons.

A few weeks ago I saw some cuts on his arm and asked what they were from. He said it was a game at school, I didn't believe it but I dropped the subject and moved on.  He has been taking depression pills for a few months now and sees a counsellor every week, on Mondays and Wednesdays.

I have two other friends who have been able to speak with him through text messages but he won't even acknowledge my existence.  I am genuinely worried about him right now, he isn't like this at all. ATG, I know you've thought about suicide before and still do but have your kids.  Mike has nothing but his closest friend and I don't know what his goal in life is. I need some help from those of you who can provide it.

It's the pills. Some genius decided he was depressed and thought it'd be a good idea to sell him the pills.

Sounds like a cutter. They typically don't try and kill themselves. Life's probably rough in suburbia right now. He'll snap out of it.

If you really, really think he is in imminent personal danger, you have to contact his parents or somebody in authority. Beware, your opinion is not the same as evidence.

I don't mean to sound flip, but a good slug in the shoulder and a " what the fuck is your problem " may be what's called for.

Good luck.

Alright, so what I've gathered so far is that the pills will make him crazy and that tough love is most likely what is best if he is really thinking of suicide.

The pills won't make him crazy in my experience its more that the pills will reduce the depression enough for him to think clearer and be able to try to sort things out.  The problem can occur if he then doesn't want to help himself.  The counselling is a good sign as long as he takes it seriously.

He needs to go do something he enjoys doing whatever that is. Think of one thing he likes to do and feels happy doing and take him to it. If he stays in his room the hole time he will just become more depressed but if he goes outside you never know what will happen, he may see a hot girl and feel happy.

Maybe he hates you. He talks to your mates.

A prescription based off of a misdiagnosis can really screw people up, especially if it's for mental issues.

Self harm is 99% of the time a cry for help or attention. If he didn't want you to notice the cuts on his arm he'd have made damn sure you wouldn't have seen them. Try and get the chance to have a proper talk with him but like ATG says don't be too softly softly about it, try being straight up but in a way that shows you're his buddy and you care.

something else might be going on in his life that is depressing and he just might now want you to feel his pain and have you get what is happening to him

The pills are sorta a double edged sword. They can help, but they can also hurt. Is he taking the pills under the supervision of a doctor? How often does he see that doctor. How often is he alone. How often do the cuts show up.

Sometimes, people can have serious negative reactions to anti-depressants. I had a very severe one to Prozac, and I was very fortunate to have been with a friend at the time. A change of medicine might be in order, as well as a watchful eye. Depression brought on by hormonal imbalance as a teen is something that should be taken seriously, but I wouldn't loose sleep over it yet. Just make sure you talk to someone about it, and make sure that someone is responsible and liable.

A good way to show him you're serious is to contact him directly for the "what the fuck is your problem" conversation, don't just wait until you run into him.
