If the Middle East wants the rest of the world to take them seriously, they need to stop with their stupid ways. Forcing woman to be covered in this fashion is ridiculous, considering how hot it gets and how they're basically not allowed deodorants.

I for one believe they need to shy away from their old practices and come up with something better. I'm sure their women are sick and tired of it. Maybe women in the Middle East need their own civil rights campaign.

What will happen is that they'll elect moderates like Khatami next time around and he'll loosen the rules again. The fabulous cycle of polarised politics is not just a European or American preserve. For the record, many muslim women like wearing their hijabs and would be insulted by your condescending attitude towards religious practice.

The university brigade is very outspoken in Iran and always has been - they have been protesting this of late.

lets not just try to force them militarily to stop covering up.

Its wrong of course, and luckily in Bosnia women dont cover up, actually most of them walk half naked

The muslim women have been opressed by their religion and men for hundreds of years. I'm sorry to say that you won't be seeing any chages in your lifetime. Old habits are hard to break.

That's disappointing to see considering Iran has often been one of the more liberal and tolerant of the Islamic nations. Imadinnerjacket may push his luck too far though. I understand the youth are growing disillusioned with the Mullahs in Iran.

I'm very surprised to hear that. I was always given to understand that women have very similar rights to men in Iran, unlike the Saudi's. They just have to wear that headscarf that covers half their hair.

Ha ha quite funny.  I remember a similar story from Bridgette Nielsen but it was in America.  She wanted to go topless on a beach but got arrested for it!!!!

Is that not a watered down version of the Iranian policy?

At least it wasn't Saudi Arabia where they allowed several young girls to burn to death, rather than leave their school building without their jihab.

Mr I'm-a-dinner-jacket needs to buck his ideas up. Summer == scantily-clad women everywhere. Without one, there cannot be the other.
God, that's such a stupid name.

USA arrest 2 women for not covering up.

Why is this any different?

Because those 2 women won't get stoned to death, they'll get a fine.

Exactly what makes breasts different from the face or feet? It's totally subjective.

When a guy talks to another guy, he looks at their face.  When a guy talks to a lady, he will often look at her breasts.  Only freaks look at someone's feet when talking to them.

I thought Iran was this big forward-thinking Arab nation trying to cure AIDS and shore up its electrical grid.

My point is we in the West have unequal laws too.  It is legal for a man to go anywhere he pleases with no top on exposing his breasts (in the UK anyway) but a woman can't show hers (not sure on UK law here but I know it's prohibited in the USA).  And it can't even be an argument of size either as I've seen fat men with big tits and skinny woman with breasts smaller than mine.

How can we slag off another country's laws when ours, in principle, are the same albeit far less drachonian.

Come on, man.  You're stretching really far to compare women exposing their breasts to men not wearing shirts.  Be honest now, whether you're gay or not, a woman showing her breasts is far more arousing than a man showing his chisled physique.  To go even further and compare jailtime for uncovered faces with a fine for exposed breasts is just hilarious.
