How active are you in real life?

A lot of the debaters here have a lot of political knowledge and seem to feel pretty strongly about the issues. So how many of you actually go out in real life to support these causes? I personally do a lot of charity runs, (if those count as being active), community service, and I also do marches and stuff. I will be going to Displace Me this weekend, where I will sleep in a park with thousands of other people to bring attention to the war in northern Uganda and encourage US involvement in peace talks there. How about you?

I do social service in elementary schools (painting, cleaning up shit, developing contingency plans, etc) but also help sometimes a pal of mine who's a boy scout in thinking of new games. And the usual help me with this and that problems/exercises (where I study glorious industrial engineering ).

I'm in college, I get so many "Causes" thrown in my face that I just don't care anymore. Stonewalling works well.

I'm just afraid that one day I'm gonna walk to class and be greeted by:

"Excuse me. We're taking donations for HIV+, paraplegic, homeless, starving, orphaned babies in Iraq and Darfur. Would you like to make a donation."

Cause I know that I can NOT walk past that woman and still get out of going to hell.

I was more active in volunteer organizations before my kid came and I've basically turned my attention in-wards. I did a 2 months in Israel as an ambulance driver for the Red Magen David, but I wasn't Jewish so they said I needed to pay up for my training. For politics, here in Romania they have the Mises Institute which is basically a libertarian think-tank and I've attended a few lectures over the last 3 years whenever they had an English speaker, but politics here is pretty corrupt still, so I haven't seen the point participating locally. Its basically a social contract between the Romanian people and politicians like "We'll behave and not screw with your lives and you won't ask how we made our first million." Its completely cynical but it will take another generation to change (or a mass execution of all ex-communist robber barons in power).

I like the Mises people and agree with most of their views, but when it comes to them explaining free-market capitalism like its a religion and we should take it on faith without factual backup, I get a little edgy.

"So what's the answer to problem X?"
"Free markets!"
"Yeah, but what specifically?"
"Free markets!"
"But how would you implement that without causing chaos?"
"Just free the markets, the problem will fix itself!" (baffled look at how you could question them...)
"Uh huh...So what else could we do instead?"
"Capitalism!"

I've been to a couple of student fee protests, thats about it.

Some of the muppets who organised the second protest went and protested near the airport when Bill Clinton came to visit and was due to fly out. Why the fuck a US president would care about NZ uni fees is beyond me.

At work we run a lot of charity abseils down structures. we did number 1 hagley road in brimingham, the transport bridge in a town in south wales, dudley castle, solihull hospital maternaty ward....
its great you see a lot of disadvantaged people doing the abseils aswel! plus you get a bit of free stuff and once the back of my head was on tv (midlands today). wow im famous.

downside is that although its a job, as we do them for charity we dont always get paid!

Was more active when i was younger - nowadays raising 3 kids and keeping myself fit is the main priority, supports 1 local and 1 international good cause on a regular basis economically !

Have held two lectures about the importance of bio diversity and the consequenses following the lack of such at my 12 year old son`s school !

I plan on someday visiting Palestine and Lebanon (I'm a quarter Lebanese) - actually, and Israel - and I'll bring my camera and see everything I saw on documentaries with my own eyes. I'm really interested in politics and marketing, and I'm planning on perhaps making a political video...

I go to the well organised marches (don't have much time for bullshit Commie college society marches as the leaders of those things are usually full of shit). I marched against Iraq before the war and had intended to march against Israel before they played Ireland in the soccer in Dublin but I had to go out of town unfortunately. I sign petitions and contribute occasionally to non profit charitable organisations. Haven't decided who I'll be voting for in the next election, which shouldn't be far away.

However, in real life I do little in the realm of what goes on here. Usually I keep my opinions to myself and never really get in a full on debate about anything so this place is world news headquarters.
