This story really grabbed my attention because I run 3 to 4 times a week and never knew this could happen from drinking too much water.
I knew people died from drinking too much water after popping pills in a club etc but I never really associated it with PT.
I guess when I run the thing that stops me from drinking too much water is because I know I'd get a stitch.

Who else here runs? Is this news to you? or something you're already very aware of?

THE 22-year-old who collapsed and died after running the London Marathon was named last night as David Rogers.

David — a fitness instructor who completed the race in an impressive 3hr 50min — collapsed after he crossed the finish line and had to be rushed to hospital.

He died there yesterday morning as organisers faced fury after admitting they ran out of water at some places during London’s hottest-ever marathon.

But David, from Milton Keynes, Bucks, collapsed due to hyponatraemia. The condition, a lack of sodium in his body, can be caused by drinking too much water.

Parents Chris and Sarah told last night how they watched with pride as he raced just hours before his death.

Chris, 52, said: “We saw him coming across Tower Bridge. He saw us and waved and then leapt in the air. He was doing what he wanted to do.”

The couple then saw him again a mile before before the finish. Chris said: “He was labouring a bit, but only like everyone else at that stage.”

He added: “He was a happy-go-lucky lad who brought happiness to everyone.”

David was the ninth person to die in 27 years of the marathon. Sunday’s race in 23°C (73°F) heat also left two others fighting for life.

Desperate runners told how they were forced to drink from discarded bottles on the road or go off-route and BUY some. One said: “There were four or five consecutive miles where water had run out.”

A marathon spokeswoman said 2,600 extra bottles were drafted in to each station on the second half of the course. But she admitted: “Some did run out.”

A total of 57 of the race’s 36,391 starters needed hospital treatment. One who was in a critical condition immediately after the event had recovered enough yesterday to return to a normal ward.

St John Ambulance volunteers treated 5,032 runners, many for heat exhaustion and dehydration. Organisers rejected calls to bring the event forward to February.

I heard about a radio station that had a water-drinking contest for some money or a car or something, and the lady who "won" died from the same thing.

wow, ive never heard of that happening to a runner. but then again, ive only run in high school competitions (5 km) so i guess none of the runners around me are THAT into the whole thing to suffer from water poisoning.

wow.  could eating snacks such as chips (not "freedom" fries to you brits) have prevented this lack of sodium?

not news to me.

it happens because of the sodium to water ratio. sodium plays a key role in preventing cells from gathering too much water and like any substance, it flows from high to low concentration. when you drink too much water, the sodium-water ratio is higher within the cell than outside, so it flows out to correct this issue. this leaves too much water within the cell, which, if memory serves me, inhibits the flow of nutrients across its cell membrane, killing the cell.

it wasn't a lack of sodium. he drank waaaay too much water during that race. enough to gain weight during the run, opposite the norm.

in any case, no, it wouldn't. it would hit his blood stream too slowly. its likely they would have injected pure sodium into his veins.

Water Intoxication. Usually happens asfter ingesting 'e' and feeling thirsty and drinking bottles upon bottles of water. Too much water screw up the balance of your electrolytes diluting your bodily fluids if you don't excrete it. This cause fatal brain disturbance and death. Enjoy that E friends.

That.

Damn. I used to run Cross Country/Track, and the seniors always used to tell me to drink a lot of water. "Drink water until your piss turns clear. Then drink some more."

Then again, too much of anything can be potentially harmful.

Water poisoning is real, no matter how ridiculous it sounds. As you perspire, you need to restore the salts lost. Sports drinks bearing the banner of electrolytes essentially do this (look on the ingredients and you'll most likely see salt somewhere), as well as boost your sugar levels, and are thus regarded as better refreshments during or between heavy activity. Gatorade is ideal (ad-alert!!).

On the plus side, you won't have to piss as often.

In the UK, there was a famous case where a teenager - Leah Betts - died from taking E at a rave party.  It was all over the news media and her parents made a big campaign against the use of the drugs.

What wasn't widely reported in the campaign was that the E didn't kill her.  She drank too much water, that's all.

i know it's slightly off topic, but Aardfrith is right. E itself is pretty harmless its when the person reacts to how their feeling and has no idea of its side affects that can cause fatality's.

Chocolate is also lethal in large enough dosages

His death was likely the result of many factors. It is rare for someone to sweat so much sodium out of their body that they die if they do not drink unreasonably excessive amounts of water or partake in a low-sodium diet.

Either way, if you're going to participate in an event upwards of 1-2 hours, esspecially if in a hot environment, you may want to consider drinking fluids with sodium, chloride, and potassium in them.

16 floz 2 hours before an event is enough for most people to be hydrated. During events you should take chug a little at regular intervals, or sip if your stomach can't handle chugging. After events you should drink fluids regularly until your weight returns to normal. Or, urination can be a sign of nearing rehydration, esspecially if your urine is the color of lemon-juice, which is the normal color of urine. The old  myth that drinking water until your urine is clear is not a good indicator of rehydration, however, dark urine is an indicator of dehydration.

Anyone have the link to the wiki page, or any page, where those people went around trying to ban water, but used water's chemical name or something and confused everyone?
