In the last couple of years i think some news headlines about Russia is a sign of a disturbing shift in what direction it`s leaders are taking concerning it`s behaviour both inwards as well as positioning itself towards western countries !

To me it looks like Putin is ridding himself of critics and domestic problems when every so often there is reports of:

*Critics that have been in suspicious accidents !
*Digging reporters poisoned !
*Several centers for elderly have burned down in an alarming rapid rate !
*At least one home for handicapped children is burned to the ground !
*Imprisonment of Company leaders !
*Increased rate of expelling foreigners for espionage without evidence !
*Increased violence when handling demonstrators !

Will add some sources later !

Isn't it true that something like 30 Russians own 25% of the entire wealth of the country.

The impression i`m getting is that Putin is working on turning that back so the wealth shifts hands again into the state treasury !

Is a reason why many of the wealthiest Russians have left the country after sucking it dry for many years and most of this sadly when Russia was under the control of Yeltsin, may he rest in piece !

hate to say it but buildings burning down doesnt mean squat. i doubt highly that there is any enforced building regulations of any high standard, let alone if the building has been there for more than 15 years it was probably done by a unskilled or unmotivated worker.
what risk would handicapped kids have for the government?

but yes there are some hugely worrying trend's, interestingly enough on a bit of a side note apparently russian intelligence agency levels in the UK are as high as they were during the cold war. at a time our countermeasure agency has been shrunk completely to give way for anti terrorist measures.

The expenses running the Russian state is alarmingly high and imho it looks like they are ridding themselves of some social "problems" like handicapped children, elderly and mentally challenged people !

They replaced the Tzars and serfdom with a totalitarian dictatorship and "socialism"....

Russia's government has always been fucked up and will always be fucked up. End of story.

Great people and culture though.

Pre 1989, there was a balance of power among elites in Russia between the politicians (Politburo) and intelligence forces (KGB).  post 1989, the elites have come to be dominated by KGB/former KGB.  everyone from the politicians to the business tycoons to the media moguls are in some way affiliated at some point in time with the intelligence forces.

I'll second the thought, some of my best times were spent in Russian communities in Israel, the people definitely have a unique mentality and do help out readily those adopted into their "families".  The Eastern Europe "elites" are very much their own animal though, very different than the people they rule.

Yes, Putin is a thug, but he seems to be a thug with nationalist interests at heart.  To compare him to our own thugs in power though creates some strange contradictions.  He doesn't seem to have the interests of the money elite in mind when his policies are enacted, unlike Bush, but he is far more brutal and conniving in keeping a lid on dissent.

I guess we'll see when his term expires if he actually steps down or not, then we'll know for sure what direction Russia is headed.

Yeltsin sold the countries wealth of for pennies creating these uber wealthy group of Russians. His intent was to kick start the economy, which he did quickly, but at the expense of the poor. The rich get richer and the poor poorer. Putin is I hope trying to reign in that wealth gap.
Russia has a shit load of resources and manpower at her disposal. I think Putin is trying to set Russia to be a global super power again. He has to wait to the worlds resources become more expensive and thinly stretched before Russia can start cashing in. Europe is going to be depending on Russia for most of its gas in 10 years time and you just know Russia is going to use that as leverage for all sorts of concessions.
Russia worries my future way more that Iran or NK.

Russia will be the arms backer for muslim nations once WW3 starts. The muslim world will attempt to attack Europe like Nazi Germany. Instead of Blitzkreig, you all blitz susicide bombers. They will be fashioned with Russian Military equipment and wreak havoc. The plan will be once, all eyes are on them, Russia will then enter for the killing blows (nuclear stirkes). Once super powers are devastated, Russia will turn on thier friendly muslims and destroy them, like Nazi Germany did Russia. In the end, there will be no superpower. Hundreds of millions of people will be dead. Every nation will be left to pick up the pieces during a fallout. Radiation poisoning will run rampant. The globe will be forever altered from the devestating atomic bombs. Civilization will cease. Power will be out and never return. The internats will be a distant memory. Coddled, spoiled little teenagers will cower in their homes remains awaiting thier savior, who never comes. Food soon runs out. The skys darken with thick clouds of radioactive dust blocking out the sun for 50 years.

All animal life begins to deteriorate and die. Soon, bugs and ants are the diet not of choice, but of necessity.

Survival of the fittest. Or whoever has the biggest gun when the dust settles.

Just my opinion of course.

Just at the moment, no.

If you withdraw from Iraq, probably.

Someone who knows a thing or two about our military.

That's where the U.S. Army is today. The soldiers in the personnel account just can't be stretched to cover our strategic debts. We've maxed out our military credit card.

The Army is out of people.

Much of the hysteria about a "broken Army" exaggerates the immediate situation. We still have the finest, most-capable Army - and overall military - in the world. But if the institution isn't broken yet, it's showing worrisome cracks.

IN recent travels, I en countered a new skepti cism among officers. They see potential in the tactics belatedly adopted in Iraq, but worry it may be too late. Despite the media-teaser bombings in recent weeks, the Baghdad surge could work over time. But we may not have that time. And we don't have the troops.

The account's empty. And our leaders are still writing checks.
