Good news! MS Might have to extend support past 2008 now

Responding to customer demand Dell has restarted selling new PCs with Windows XP installed on them.
The decision reverses a policy begun in January that meant Windows Vista was the only operating system available on almost all new home machines.

The change came after Dell's feedback site was swamped with calls for the return of the venerable software.

Now customers can opt for the Home or Professional version of XP on six models of Dell machines.

Customer clamour

The four consumer versions of Windows Vista went on sale on 30 January and since then many PC makers have sold most of their machines with the software pre-loaded.

Since January Dell has been gradually phasing out the XP option on new PCs. By March Dell only sold two models in its extensive range with the XP operating system installed.

Dell is currently the second-largest PC seller in the world and has a 15.2% share of the overall PC market.

Dell changed the policy in response to pleas posted on its Ideastorm website which invites customers to post suggestions about how the PC maker can meet their needs.

The suggestion saying "Don't eliminate XP just yet" got almost 11,000 votes. In response Dell said it would offer the operating system on four models of Inspiron notebooks and two Dimension desktop PCs.

"This is really odd," said Michael Silver, research vice president at analysts Gartner. "On new PCs, consumers usually do want the latest and greatest."

Other analysts speculated that the reason consumers were keen on XP was because it was familiar and it worked well with many of the digital peripherals they owned.

In response Microsoft said that Dell was responding to a "small minority" of customers who had a very "specific" request.

It is not clear how long Dell will be able to keep its offer to install XP going. From the end of January 2008 PC makers will no longer be able to buy new licences for the operating system.

Intresting, can't see why anyone would want XP instead of Vista tbh... but o well.

I guess it is the people who have been influenced by the bad reports from people about Vista- with most of them not understanding the reasons behind their problems with Vista, or not even having the OS.

I have the Business edition of Vista, and everything people say about Vista is untrue.

It is not slower than XP, It uses more memory because of the "SuperFetch" - which infact speeds up the PC. Would you rather have 512mb of unused space, or 512mb of RAM with commonly executed programs already loaded into it?

There are not that many problems with Drivers, there are plenty of drivers avaible.

i love my vista more and more everyday i use it.. cant even imagine going back to XP..  have put vista ultimate on both my pcs and both working flawlessly.. only reason i can imagine people wanting xp (other than they are just scared of change.. i guess it's human nature (or so they say and that means i am not human) is if there is propriatery applications they use for work.. that don't work on vista.. other than that, wTH!

Well it's just another reason why competition is healthy. People like XP, but MS don't want to give it to them. The only reason they can make this decision is there is no alternative... unless you want to get a free operating system.. but why in the world would you get something if you don't have to pay for it ???

We have the same hardware ... so from today you would say all is good with vista and these things?

Certainly would JSnipy I have installed the latest creative drivers (specifically for Vista) and also the latest vista driver from Nvidia..... I have not installed BF2 or 2142 yet but COD and STALKER work fine.

I do like some of the widgets too..the one that show mem usage and core usage is really useful, also one that shows BF2 stats and 2142 Stats..lol

Because right now there's not really a need for Vista and DX10, since nothing actually utilizes it's features yet, unless you just have a hard-on for being any early adopter. Plus how many people buying from Dell could honestly care about what Vista offers vs. XP?

Had someone I work with buy a new Dell laptop with Vista on it, from day one it was struggling with it, ended up just formatting it and dumping XP on it, goes a fuck load faster. I wont be bothering with Vista for a long time yet, probably when I get a new PC the end of this year.

I wonder if they are including everything that HP does, like their printers etc.

I know Dell has the same thing as HP ---- I guess it also helps that Walmart and Sams Club sells HP
