I'd like to hear the responses from the people that posted those warm fuzzy Marine stories over the past few days.

There always seems to be a certain breed of people in history that do everything possible to get killed and somehow just can't seem to.  I always wondered about that...like Wyatt Earp, or the KKK founder NB Forrest.  They're either very good or very evil people, but either way seem some kind of invincible.

Its funny the article for him says "defies the enemy" when it should be "defies laws of thermodynamics and biology."

Yeah...........I'm wondering whether the bomb was made such that the shrapnel went out around the bomb but not up (where he was, by the sounds of it).

In the intelligence field I would say about half are libs of some sort or another and the other half are hard core conservatives.  Nearly everyone had deep political feelings, though it generally didn't color their judgment when it came to doing the job.

Fast-forward to my logistics unit, where the ASVAB scores dropped to the average 40's and 50's and you got a more ecclectic mix of (Kentucky windage numbers) 30% or so fundies (were pro-Bush, not so sure now), 20-30% conservatives (including black neo-cons?!?!), 30% or so completely oblivious, and about 10% patriotic liberals.  There's also the occaisional wierdo liberal like the hard-core wiccans and such.

You dip even lower in the ASVAB realm and you start to run into the real right-wingers, hard core fundies, etc.

The big ceveat though is sometimes they're just faking.  When I was in DLI, for example, I thought that one Sgt. Mormon (a marine), a classmate, was a complete moron based on how he acted.  It was one day when we were smoking out of earshot of his 2 other devil dogs in class that I actually saw he could articulate complete sentences, and he was actually one of the most inciteful guys I've ever talked to in the short time I was there.  Back in earshot, his face changed back completely to these vacant eyes and barking in mono-syllable words in 3 word sentences.

I'd say you could get maybe 20-30% to support Bush in his bid for presidency for life.

My bad, read the original article so fast I missed that little word "since"...I'll correct it.

As for support for Bush, by the numbers.  This is from a Military Times poll done last December while we still had a Republican congress:

Military Times wrote:

Only 35 percent of the military members polled this year said they approve of the way President Bush is handling the war, while 42 percent said they disapproved. The president’s approval rating among the military is only slight ly higher than for the population as a whole. In 2004, when his popularity peaked, 63 percent of the military approved of Bush’s handling of the war. <snip>

Just as telling, in this year’s poll only 41 percent of the military said the U.S. should have gone to war in Iraq in the first place, down from 65 percent in 2003. That closely reflects the beliefs of the general population today — 45 percent agreed in a recent USA Today/Gallup poll.(My note:  Thats actually lower than general population, 3% is actually quite significant, that a lot of troops)

While approval of Bush’s han dling of the war has plunged, ap proval for his overall performance as president remains high at 52 percent. While that is down from his high of 71 percent in 2004, it is still far above the approval rat ings of the general population, where that number has fallen into the 30s. <snip>

Similarly, when asked to de scribe their political views on a scale from very conservative to very liberal, there was a slight shift from the conservative end of the spectrum to the middle or moderate range. Liberals within the military are still a rare breed, with less than 10 percent of re spondents describing themselves that way. (Cool, I was dead on...and for the fundies...)

One contentious area of military life in the past year has been the role religion should play. Some troops have complained that they feel pressure to attend religious services. Others have complained that chaplains and superior offi cers have tried to convert them. Half of the poll respondents said that at least once a month, they attend official military gather ings, other than meals and chapel services, that began with a prayer. But 80 percent said they feel free to practice and express their religion within the military.
Full article here, pretty interesting.  About 66% of those who were surveyed had actually ever been deployed, I'd be real interested in seeing what the numbers were for just those that actually went somewhere.

I have a cousin who's a 25 year army vet (he spent the last 18 in SF) who can be described as a strong liberal. I know he votes mostly Dem (incl. for Kerry in the last general election).

He is our Commander in Chief, punishable by article 88 of the UCMJ, or for the enlisted Article 92.

Note: While only commissioned officers can be charged under this article, DOD Directive 1344.10- POLITICAL ACTIVITIES BY MEMBERS OF THE ARMED FORCES ON ACTIVE DUTY, extend these same requirements to all individuals on active duty. Enlisted members and warrant officers who violate these provisions can be charged under Article 92, of the UCMJ, Failure to Obey an Order or Regulation.

Above Information from Manual for Court Martial, 2002, Chapter 4, Paragraph 12

Republicans though are good for the military, just not when we are involved in 2 wars
The UCMJ is set up so if the man can get your with 1 charge, if he's not lazy he can stick you with 2 or 3 more.

So what you are generalizing must be all Military members must be mindless idiots cause we follow a set of rules, and values.  For the most part the military is one of the only jobs the man can stick you for your money, take rank, and shaft you with extra work.  Now if you had a family would you say something that would put your family at risk?  Sorry I might be "Mindless" but I am smart enough to know that without the money uncle sam pays me, My wife, and 3 daughters would not be able to eat. So yeah I'm a "mindless" idiot, but at least I have my priorities straight so fuck off.

They're smart enough to realize that the democrats are incapable of defending the country. While they may not embrace Bush, he's a lesser of two evils.

What the hell does this have to do with anything?  I didn't ask whether the US military ran around bad mouthing Bush, I didn't ask whether they were generally Republican or Democratic, I didn't ask whether they were Conservative or Liberal, I asked whether they tended to be in favour of Bush.

And I certainly didn't pass judgement on them.
