I was reading an article in which some of the complexities of building a bomb, or even attaining enough enriched uranium, were outlined.

What, exactly, is the pressing concern over Iran? Not only is it going to take them at least two years to even get to a stage where it might be possible to test a rudimentary bomb, the road to get there is so fraught with technical difficulty as to make even this 'deadline' unlikely. One misplaced spec of dust or fingerprint is enough to ensure the whole process has to be started again and the Iranians just don't have the domestic technical competance to make this work anytime in the near future.

So what's the rush, why the build up in the gulf? What the fuck happened to diplomacy?

a) Wouldn't be as effective as an American or Russian bomb

I hadn't realized that. But according to Wikipedia (which is always right, you know), that is the only time it has ever happened. And SA gave up its weapons not because of outside pressure, but because the old regime didn't want the new democratic government to have nukes. That is a little bit encouraging, but it seems very different from the Iranian situation.

I agree with you - what the hell heppened to diplomacy? (and, yes, I knew the answer to that one before reading it in the thread...)

Anyhoo, it does depend on what type of bomb Iran want to build.

A sophiscated inter-continental ballistic nuclear warhead, even a bomb the sophistication of Little Boy or Fat Man (the Hirosima and Nagasaki A-bombs) - that takes time and a level of techinal expertise that Iran probably don't posses.

A dirty suitcase bomb - not so difficult.

Reagan was a great speaker. Provided he had a decent speech on the autocue - which due to the quality of his speech writers, he usually did.
