Hey guys, I'm looking for something that can model 3D objects (such as buildings, interiors, etc) of somewhat large complexity.  It would need to provide decent detail, allow custom surfaces and lighting sources - perhaps taking advantage of DX# features - and allow a walk-through of the design.

Preferably share-ware, but I'm willing to pay for it so long as we aren't talking hundreds.

Any suggestions?

(The BF2 modeler is too buggy for me ... keeps crashing).

I have no idea if it is any good but a friend of mine used to mention a freeware 3d modelling program called blender.  check out the wiki entry and see if it's what your looking for.

Oh ... Blender ... I've got that about a year ago when I was thinking about doing some simple animation work (I didn't need it) ... in my mind, I have always thought of it as a small object modeler, but when I went to the site it seems to promote itself as being able to do larger scale items such as:

Oh how I love open source projects!!!!!!!

Maybe Maya Personal?  Has some restrictions but it's a legal version of Maya (5 stars) for free.

Autodesk Maya Personal Edition

Here's a fully functional 30 day trial of my personal fav and it can even save your shit during the trial!

Lightwave 3D 9.0 $750 to buy and movie studio quality all the way.

Here are some Lightwave samples of what I mean by quality:
