I've always likened environmentalism to religion and look who jumping on the green bandwagon now. Is it the place of the church to get involved in the 'green debate' and do they have the right to preach green to their followers.

Well, the church has already preached a lot of things to their followers, what's one more?

There's been a lot of turmoil in the evangelical movement in the US lately as it tries to detach itself from the conservative business movement.  Some members are trying to steer the religious followers to be more "responsible stewards of the environment" rather than the attitude "God put resources there to rape and pillage."  If the sheep can be used for the forces of good, I don't see the problem.

Does the church have the right to preach to their followers?  Are you trying to be funny?

They are just another pressure group trying to get a nice cut of the pie at others expense.
The earth will take care of itself, we are the ones who will have to adapt, but we are quite good at that.

Environmentalism is about looking after our environment, it doesn't really have anything to do with religion but at the same time I don't see why churches can't have an opinion.

"Preach green"; and it was a question to spark debate, not a statement and certainly not a stab at humour.

Better that than "preach racism", "preach hate", "preach scientific ignorance", or even "preach whatever political viewpoint the minister was bribed to preach."  There's a lot of evils in this world, "churches going Green" I would put near the bottom of the list.

I agree. No one's going to die. I don't mind preaching in general, but I like to think the people preaching to me are experts in what they are preaching. Since when was the church an expert on green issues?

Since when was it an expert on gravity, determining if someone was a witch or not, the shape of the earth, biology, anatomy, or history.  Church people don't need facts, they just need to believe.  If they believe planting a tree is good, let them.  They won't hurt you, and if they come door to door bible-thumping, just do what you always did and sic the rottie on them.

Anyway, how can churches saying "don't make a mess of the planet" be a bad thing?

Lol, you've won me over with humour. Let them do what they like, no doub't it won't affect me in the slightest. It just goes to show how irrelevant and inconsequential the church really is today, something I'm very grateful for too.

Since they're in contact with the Chief Engineer.

Seriously, how do you come up with these topics?  It's the job of religion to tell people what to do.  That's what the pope does.

It was a debate on relevance and the consequentiality of the church in the context of green issues. Never mind Bubs, go rest your sleepy head.

And thus essentially to tell them that he exists and to believe in him. So Bubba's right.

It's the Pope.  He comments on anything of importance because he's a world leader.  That's what he does.

I will when I feel like it.

No, that's the job of a Christian, or the sacred duty of a Missionary.  A Priest/Pope etc. is supposed to instruct people on how to live their lives.  Hence why Christians go to see them rather than unbelievers.

I'd say environmentalism formed a part of religion but isn't a religion in its own right.
