So I finally decided to reinstall XP, and when it asks for my CD - Key it says invalid key entered. I have tried the key printed on the sticker on the side of my case and also the key that the Keyfinder program told me it was. My  copy is OEM I think and it's a dell. Also - I am using my friend's cd to install so it is probably different. (But they are both home edition)

Check if an 's' could be a '5' and so on. I've had similar problems with keys before and that sort it out.

Double - Triple - Quadruple checked. One weird thing is that it ends in PXXXQ (which sounds kinda weird) and there are SIX numbers printed right  above the PXXXQ.

Dell have their own OEM discs. If you want to reinstall using your cd-key you must use a Dell disc.

Its a pain in the arse, huh?

Yeah.... and I ordered this PC like 5 years ago so I have no idea what our account name and stuff is.

OEM CD's are different. You have to use an XP Home Edition CD set if that's what your product key is.

If you've updated your hardwre too much your cd key is now invalid, you'll have to phone the indian call centre and get a new key. If/when they ask why you need one just say you ugraded because some part failed/died. I've done this 3 times now and got a new key each time, all of which worked.

Wait.... could I torrent one or does it have to be a Dell OEM CD?

Well unless America is any different (which is possible, our Dells still come with 256MB of RAM), you will need to get a Dell OEM XP Home to accept the key on the side of the case. Regular OEMs (as you have noticed) think that key is not valid.

This happened fairly recently for me. I had to order a disc over the summer (err winter). Took a nice 5 weeks.

But perhaps someone has made a torrent. I'll look around and PM.
