This is fucking outrageous. Why would we ever want Turkey as part of the EU while its military are such a powerful political force?

It is part of the Turkish constitution: the army must weigh in if the secular character of the country is threatened. It seems to be the only way of preventing Islam impacting on politics in muslim countries (that or a dictatorship).

Interesting situation. If the military intervenes it doesn't look like they will be entering the EU right now, but if the islamic party wins and does forward their agenda the EU won't be able to accept an islamic state. All the meanwhile you've got the Iraqi kurds attempting to start an insurrection at the turkish border and pressure from the US and Isreal to allow fly-overs from Turkey to Iran. Turkey does not sound like a happy place to be living right now.

Personally I'm against Turkish entry into the EU. I don't think an overwhelmingly Islamic country fits. Like it or not we are a Christian/Atheist club of nations.

I would much prefer to see secular government pushed through democratic means, but the army may just be the only thing keeping Turkey from falling to an Islamic government. If that happens, then we're really in trouble, not only because Turkey is one of the few democracies of the Middle East but because of its extremely important location. The EU really needs to just go ahead and bring Turkey into the fold to keep it Westernized.

I dunno. It may or may not be a good idea having Turkey in the EU. On the one hand it could help Turkey to develop in a positive way. The integration of an Islamic state, especially one with such a secular political system as Turkey, could also help bridge the rift in cultures between east and west, an example of how we can live together.
On the other hand it could be a complete disaster. The very fact that the military should need to prevent an Islamic government coming to power and turning Turkey into an Islamic state with Islamic based laws, is worrying. Perhaps a country whose people vote in an Islamic government is not a suitable member for the EU.

The real question is whether the people of Turkey would be properly integrated within the EU. If a majority of them want to vote a Islamic government into power, then sadly I fear the answer to that is no. If Turkey were to become a member of the EU with such an unsuitable population then all sorts of bad things could happen. Not least of which is possible radicalisation of certain elements in society, both in Turkey and the other EU members. This could have all sorts of nasty negative reprecussions.
If Turkey continues down the road of secular government and the people become more secular, as has been happening in the country for many years, then at some point in the future they could be a valuable addition to the EU. Just probably best to leave it a bit and see how things play out.

First, this guy will not turn Turkey into an Islamic Republic, he'll probably make a deal with the army and if he doesn't, then he'll have to face the army and the Turkish people, haven't you see them protesting against it in the news, you think they'll sit down and let this happen, I don't think so.

Erdogan and his buddies are only playing the tough guys and see how far they can go.

I personally think turkey should be allowed in, particularly as it would allow the EU to put a fair amount More pressure on Iran. why? Iran would have a border with the EU. then if Iran starts anti-western talk again, then it would soon face a rather sharper sanctions than a travel ban. hell, if Iran joined ( after properly freeing it's people and adopting a secular state,i mean) then the EU might be able to save the Iraq situation.

No, I doubt very much Turkey will turn into an Islamic Republic. But the very fact that enough people in Turkey support such an Islamic leader for this even to be an issue shows Turkey is probably unready for EU membership. Possibly at some point in the not too distant future they could join, but not quite yet.

Iran could never join the EU. It isn't in Europe.

At least there are plenty of people out in the streets opposing the threat of an Islamic government system. I'm not sure what the big picture is statistically but there sure seemed like a lot of people out marching on the news. I'm not always a fan of military intervention in domestic political affairs but sometimes it is what is needed when the incumbent government is trying to implement things that are not truly at the heart of he nations people.
