Yep,

10.20 - Played BF2
10.40 - Quit BF2, Computer crashed but that is normal on Vista after BF2 sometimes
10.45 - All fine, loaded up BF2 Sandbox
10.50 - Got a map chosen etc, loaded it in singleplayer, computer shut down
10.55 - High pitched whine from PSU, fans flickering and an unhealthy sounds coming from it

Result: Hyper Type-R 580W Blue, Dead!

So I won't be on for the next few days. It has given me time to revise my exams which last all this week, and I was planning on upgrading it anyway. PSU lasted only 8 months before failure (no warranty). As far as I know, my other components are safe. Although I have not tested them!

So I'm about to purchase the Corsair HX520W. Having used PSU Calculator, and assuming and X2900XT uses as much as power as an 8800GTX, I've planned all my near-necessary upgrades it came to a total of 514W. Perfect!

I'm pretty excited about my new PSU arriving, very annoyed about my Type-R though! Hey, at least my computer will be quieter though. The Type-R was noisy!

Thanks Hurricane. As for mikey, I'm using my brother's laptop hunting around the best deal of an HX520W.

I still like the dsl idea though.
I had to fix my psu recently, the fan was grinding on a wire, so i had to take it apart and put it back together... And yes i did turn the mains power off.

lol heh. I am just going to sell my Type-R as faulty, I have limited experience in fixing PSUs and just am not fond  of it anymore!

I've got a Corsair HX520W. It seems pretty good (made by Seasonic after all and they make the best PSUs). I think the X2900XT may use more power than the 8800GTX, so you may want to be careful.

Thanks Bert I will take that into consideration. Is the 520 really only 23db, is it "almost" inaudible to you?

If it's calculated out as 514 you'll want at least a 600w PSU. 4w is far too close for comfort, and IIRC ATI cards seem to use more power, plus the 2900 wants an 8 pin rather than 6 pin power cable, so it'll need more. Also, PSU's do not generally have exactly the amount they say. My $0.02, go bigger. (Y)

you should be looking for something around 600W...you always want room to grow/things to go wrong.

Hiper have been hit and miss for years, when you get a good one though they're great. Shame so many just burn out after a few months of use I'd be goin with an Enermax if I were you Corsair just do PSUs as a sideline, Enermax specialise in PSUs and also make the best ones.

It's pretty fucking quiet.

(I actually went and had a little listen to it).

Certainly quieter than my CPU cooler by a long way.

Corsairs PSUs are made by Seasonic, who are great at making PSUs.

Yeah I am huge fan of Seasonic, primarily because of the length of their cables. I have a P180, so long cables are a must - heh! I read quite a few reviews on the PSU and it sounds very, very promising. It may have been shipped today, so I will hopefully get it asap! (stealing my brother's laptop until so!)

Dude really, 18w is not a lot of playing room. Especially if the 2900 is power hungry. You'll be kicking yourself later when you find out it isn't enough and you need to go buy yourself another new PSU. PSU's don't necessarily output exactly the amount that they say either. Get yourself a 600w one, and then you don't have to worry about it.

Ghettonarb has a point here. Better to splurge and be safe than scrimp and get swizzled.

I'm with ghetto, that is just pushing too close.  Also, PSUs tend to start losing efficiency as they approach 100% utilization.  Running a PSU that close to max power all the time will just burn the PSU out faster, and you risk taking your other parts down with it.
