What think ye of the story above? Abortion is illegal here in Ireland so when women want abortions they generally hop on a ferry to the UK to get the pregnancy terminated. This particular 17 year old girl has been legally forbidden by the Health Services Executive to leave the state for the intention of an abortion. It is known that the baby will die in childbirth or shortly thereafter. The 17 year old is taking the case to the High Court pleading 'intention to commit suicide' (basically the only thing that could possibly influence the court's decision). So, what think ye of this situation? What should be done? Is there anything wrong with our legal system? Should abortion be legalised?

Damn catholic-influenced legislation. I don't see why abortions shouldn't be legalised, if they want to keep it illegal than I'm sure some compromise could be reached, like in cases of rape, insest or when it is known that the baby will die shortly after birth.

Then again in this case it dosn't really matter. I say kill the foetus now.

Why force the girl to have a baby if it's going to die shortly after being born? I'm guessing it's they're thinking like this:

"If the child is born we can save it's soul by giving it the necessary rites of passage and it will enter heaven when it dies naturally instead of being murdered."

I think she should be allowed to make the abortion, giving birth isn't that great an experience if you know it's in vain.
Like Ty I think there should be a compromise if abortions should stay illegal, nobody should be forced to have children who are the result of a rape, incestuous activity or children with lethal deficiencies.

Didn't the Roman Catholic Church last week change their stance on unborn or newborns who die?

It used to be said that they went to "Limbo" and spent eternity there.

IIRC they changed the stance to be that unborn or newborns who die are allowed into Heaven.

I don't believe in rampant abortion. I know a girl why had 4 in one year cus her and her man couldn't figure out how to open a feckin condom wrapper. What it comes down to is if you believe that a life is born when the sperm fertilizes the egg, or when the child pops its head out.
In cases like this, when the mothers mental or physical health is at threat or if the child is expected to die or be very disabled then it should be granted.

Do you have other info on this Poe? Because based on your source it sounds to me like she's not challenging the order based on risk of suicide, but rather that the order states she can't go to the UK to get an abortion unless she's at risk of suicide.

It's very easy for the Health Services Executive to tell her what to do but they don't have to squeeze a melon out of a hole the size of a small tangerine ...knowing that when all the pain, blood and possible necessity for stitches has passed the child will be dead anyway. That's a pretty damn physically and mentally damaging process for anyone to go through. Abortion should be allowed in this case.

T.Pike is right btw, I believe the Catholic Church did change it's policy on non-baptised children being allowed into heaven. The union in heaven voiced complaints over it as there is now a huge backlog of cases that have to be re-evaluated, not to mention the possibility of legal action from souls that were denied the right to eternal salvation for so many years.

RTÉ news stated that she is using the risk of suicide approach but whether or not she truly is a suicide risk is being challenged (pretty ridiculous eh?).

I think this is disgusting. Fair enough if you want to make abortion illegal (personally I disagree) but how dare you stop someone leaving the country. Although I'm guessing their defence is that they are stopping a "murder".

You don't see 17 years olds being banned from going to Spain to take advantage of their drinking laws.

I'm with this guy; if the Irish in general don't want it legalised then fine but to keep her in the country to stop her having an abortion is a little off.

Having said that, the link from the OP says that she's four months gone so she’s pushing the boundaries of being able to get the fetus terminated in the UK anyway…
