Aren't the Mullahs in Iran a bit like a more extreme version of the house of Lords in the UK ...an unelected body of people that can decide on important issues in an undemocratic fashion?san4 wrote:
QFT. Iran is frequently underestimated. It is light years more advanced than its neighbors in all sorts of ways. But regardless of who is President, don't the theocrats have ultimate control? I don't think they are particularly progressive.CameronPoe wrote:

A bit. Except that the Lords only really have the power to delay legislation.Braddock wrote:

why would you call them a traitor when they are trying to do it through democratic means (voting), they haven't made armed conflict against the state and they haven't made any treats against anybody. they are just saying what they think of the goverment and that it should be stopped and made more democratic.Bubbalo wrote:
What's funny is if someone did that in the US you'd call them a traitor.
Quite right. If they don't like the changes, they'll change it to what they like. Iran is far from being a democratic republic. It's a religious theocracy. Ahmedenijad is little more than a very loud figurehead.san4 wrote:

The problem is, most people don't understand that. They think that if there's a change to a more moderate president in Iran, then Iran will change to being a more Western-friendly country. No, they won't. They'll still be building nuclear weapons, and they'll still be aiming for Israel and other pro-Western countries.
Believe me, Ahmedenijad will lose the Presidency, but only because the theocracy regime in Iran wants it that way.
