Recently, my house was broken into and my Linksys WRT300N was stolen. That's a wireless N router, for those who don't know.

Since it was stolen, i have replaced it, and while the new router's signal strength seems to be comparable, my download speed is vastly decreased and there are frequent lag spikes. With my old router, I could stream videos on Youtube just fine, play bf2 without a hitch and download files relatively quickly. Now, however, although my ping times in bf2 servers are similar, it's hard to play when every 5-10 seconds everything jumps. Also, i hate having to wait for my videos to load.

One curiosity is that my Upload speed is essentially the same. Using speakeasy.net and using the San Francisco server (i'm in oregon), I get anywhere from 900-1500kbps on my upload tests. This was about where it was before. I get between 250-600kbps on my download tests, where before it was 2000-3000.

I understand that wireless is wireless and it is slower, but nothing other than the router itself has changed, and I'm experiencing terrible performance.

Muchos Karmas for help.

Thanks

First off, that sucks.

Did you buy the exact same router?
If so, did you configure it the same way? (Ex. Opened the same ports.)

EXACT same router.
Ports... I think so. I opened the same ports i need for games, and i think that's about all i had open.

try going from a different server on the speedtest...i find that if I use the SF server i get much lower results then if i go from Seattle WA (even though it is further away...probably has to do with the larger traffic to the server in the SF area...)

This is probably the dumbest thing you will here but, you could always take it back and say it doesn't work and get another one.

I agree. It is dumb, but you are also totally right. I'm on the verge of doing it.

And about the Seattle server, I get better times from San Fransisco.

lol thats the usually approach when it comes to 'Netgear' brand routers too, my friend has so many problems with it but got a new one and it worked fine.

I'd say get a replacement router and if that doesn't work, I'm not sure

Go catch the bugger that broke into your house, bash him in the head a few times, give him a vasectomy (ahah), and steal the router back.

they have a suspect

I know him

he's small and he's a fucker

unfortunately, he's not "guilty" yet, so I can't do anything.

OH.. Netgear.. Love hate relationship with me

I would start by doing a complete hard reset of the router and then re-doing the setup.

I always do a check of which channels are being used the most in the area which is usually 6 or 11.
I always select a channel different than what is default say for instance 2 or something like that.

Have you checked your router speed while plugged into the router directly?? if so is there a difference in the speed?

good luck and if you get fed up take a look at the D-Link DGL-4300.. I know it is not Pre-N but of all the B-G and Pre-N commercial grade routers I have used it performs much better than any others wired or wireless. it has native QOS which I use to automatically kill my wife's torrentz when I am playing and it is set to give my VIOP appliance 100% bandwidth whenever it is in use. plus it allows an ungodly amount of simultaneous connections which brings most other routers to their knees.

thanks. I may check that out. I think i'd rather not go with a whole new router, as i don't really know if they'll just refund this one (only offer a replacement). but thanks anyway.

Penesectomy seems more appororiate for this situation.

If you don't know what a penesectomy is, you shouldn't look it up. Its quite disturbing.

I also use a netgear router was pretty pricey but I havn't had disconnections from it ever and works fine for me. I the netgear WPN824 : https://img255.imageshack.us/img255/628/wpn824xk4.jpg
I think it was a good router, never had any issues with it yet (hope I havn't jinxed it :S)

Are you sure nobody else is accessing your router?

Although it is unlikely, i would check that no-one else is using your internet

I would also do a virus scan on all computers that are connected to the router, and try using the internet with the other computers turned off, that would clear any posibilities on Virus' and various 'ware stealing your bandwith.

AVG for Antivirus (Google AVG Free)
Also use some online scanners like McAfee, Norton, Windows One Care is also very good.

For Adware use Spybot S&D.

No, i guess i'm not SURE anyone else is using it, but It has a pretty damn unguessable password and I'm not in a dense urban area.

I've tried using the internet with other computers off, and it is still just as bad. I have AVG and have run a virus scan here. Nothin'.

Thanks though for the suggestions.

Try the return and get replacement, its a long shot but give it a go. Then if the replacement is just as bad go back and say I want a different type because these dont work ( get angry if they say no, the always give in to angry customers). As I say its a long shot but worth a try because it could be a faulty router!

If you're router has ethernet ports, I'd try pluging it in. That way you can tell if it's preiodical radio interference rather than a problem with your router.

Did you have anything else stolen? You might have replaced something else in your house, and the new item might cause interference (like a corless phone or something).

Plugged in, i get better speeds. (download from 6mbps to 10mbps, upload at about 1500 kbps)
They stole my desktop's 2 cd drives. I haven't replaced them yet.

I'm starting to think, partially based on reviews I'm reading, that the WRT300N is just a shitty router. Some people love them, some hate them, so maybe they are just built extremely inconsistently.

I mean, I can hold my laptop adjacent to the Paddle Antenna and the speed still sucks. I really think these routers are poorly made and VERY inconsistent.

Just go back and ask for a exchange and get a different type of router. And I would also recomend looking a reviews of routers to see if they are worth buying.
