In the world of online gaming, where many view levels and rankings as the final word on what a person's existence is worth, it's all too common to find gamers exploiting whatever bugs, loopholes, or design oversights they can find in order to get a leg up on the competition and some cold, hard evidence of superiority as a life-form.

One recent example is a rash of stats-padding instances in Electronic Arts' online first-person shooter Battlefield 2. An e-mail sent to ranked server providers earlier this week from EA employee Colin Clarke (a primary tester on Battlefield 2) addressed the issue. "We have noticed an increase in behavior where leased servers are being used by clans solely to pad players' stats," Clark wrote, "even to the extent where clans are institutionalizing rules that forbid normal play."

The exploit du jour is to set up a ranked server and advertise informal rules where players use only knives and pistols and revive each other while not taking flags. The end result is that this gameplay style accumulates statistics kept by the game at a greater rate than normal play. This makes players rise in rank more quickly, which in turn gives them quicker access to the game's unlockable weapons and a greater priority when multiple players vie for the commander position in a game.

Clarke says that creates an imbalance in the ranked server playing field and cites it as a violation of the game's terms of service. As a result, EA is taking action against the offenders involved. Anyone caught on such a server will have his or her stats stripped, and accounts sharing that person's clan tag will be examined for anomalous stats.

Since there are multiple server-hosting companies running ranked servers, EA is working with providers to enforce these rules. Among these services is GameSpot's own GameCenter subscription service, which lets gamers launch Battlefield 2 ranked servers among other features as part of a $9.95 monthly fee. Game exploits are prohibited by the GameCenter terms of use, and action is being taken against abusing EA's stats system in GameCenter servers.

Yes, it does depend where you rent a server, if its unranked you have nothing to worry about. But those rules are for ALL ranked servers wherever they are hosted. If you had read the site I linked to you would have saw that. If you go to EA.com it tells you to go to that website for matters regarding ranked servers. As a knife only unranked server wouldnt raise an eyebrow from anybody I posted information that is useful for ranked servers. So I'm sorry but that is a link for "official rules" as stated by EA in the EULA:

1. GLOBALLY ENFORCED RANKED SERVER RULES
These are rules that all admins/players using ranked servers are expected to observe and are set by EA under the EULA.

Granted the knife badge doesnt mean much   but having a ranked knife server and stat padding takes away the whole purpose of having the badge   its soposed to show an accomplishment   obviously its a little and trivial one but an accomplishment none the less   

KNIFE All you want on an unranked server this shouldnt be an issue   having the game changed for statpadding on a ranked server is stat padding how do people not see this  and stat padding just discredits the whole stats system        whats the point of having it  if everyone is gunna cheat?  to have a competition to see the biggest cheater???

I don't know why you would like to pad for a badge anyway, if not for bragging...
I atleast wouldn't be a tiny bit proud of a padded badge.

I earned Expet Knife Combat badge on a normal ranked server with no rules regarding weapon use so it definately can be done with a little practise.

And why call it Expert Knife Combat if all you do is pad for it? (Includes playing on a knife only server)

I see 2 victims with 7 kills at your stats, who says these 2 victims weren't your friends and you knived them to get your vetran badge?????? That's stat padding too. It's done so many times by different players.

Let them play at these knive/pistol only servers.
If you got the badge (vetran/expert) by legal ways, you have tasted the excitement of getting it.

Rent your own server and then you won't have any problems.   Otherwise STFU and play the game!  I play on clan servers, not just my own clan, and yes on occasion there might be one or two admins that should probably not be an admin, but for the most part I have to say most admins are unbiased.  If they aren't report them.

I kind of agree that it's only a game. And nothing should be more important then  have fun with it!

BUT

You can have that serious fun on an unranked server (if you really don't care about your stats, you won't mind, don't you?!)
I Agree with EA that's it's unfair with guys doin' it the right way. I'm near my 100 knife kills to try my Expert Knife Badge. I had a great time obtaining my basic and Vet. So much challenge!

I probably will have a hard time getting my Expert one (maybe ill never get it) but i don't wanna cheat to get it. it would not mean the same thing to me.

So...just stop whinning about "I can do wathever i want because i pay for my game" yes, you can; on an unranked server!!!

LoL.. Hmm.. the excitement of getting the badge Legally.. I wouldn't have called it Excitement.. I got more upset by missing it by one knife kill.. LoL.. But for the most part it was pretty exciting.. Especially when u can sneak up behind people or jump down from buildings.. I hated tryin to earn my pistol badges.. They were such a pain in the Arse.. but once you get them.. it's more of a sense of relief.. I feel the same for the Engineer Combat.. It wasn't exciting earning it.. I think I was more frustrated trying to earn it.. but when I got it.. It's a relief.. At least until I'm eligible for the Expert one.. LoL.. and the Anger rises..

Combat badges are easy, tank whore because you don't have to get it with the kit's gun.  I think combat badges should be relative to how good the weapons are (e.g 15 kills ofr basic assault, 7 kills for basic support etc) and only count kills with the infantry weapons.  Afterall anyone can whore a tank with each kit for 10 or 11 (SF) kills....

Easy way around this rule, offer the idea of "knife and pistol only, but if wanted, you can use any weapon"
i've actually seen an entire server co-operate with this and it was quite fun, i of course was a lamer and used sniper rifle, but it was funny seeing mobs of people with knives out.

This isnt violating any rules because the admins weren't forcing anyone to use certain weapons, but it was a suggestion and people followed.

If you can actually get close to me when sniping, and you have a knife, i'll gladly knife fight you though
