As long as we are going to have internet, piracy will continue to go on...
Cracking down on internet piracy is like cracking down on prostitution. No matter what you do, people will still do it because it's cheap and gets you what you want.

Exactly. I've seen a 10 year old kid in India selling burned american cd's out of a little shack under a bridge. Beside him there was someone making "Nike" sneakers, and a bit further down the road there was a shop selling Beckham's kangaroo skin cleats. Police can try all they want, but nothing's gonna stop a kid from trying to fill his stomach with food.Havok wrote:

The only "rip-off artists and thieves" are the RIAA. Fuck those Nazis.
And here I thought this was gonna be about actual high-seas, AK47-and-RPG piracy.
Fuck the RIAA and the MPAA. Fuck them right up their collective asses. With a goddamn hedgetrimmer.

And I'd just gotten out my diagram of the Strait of Hormuz, too. Damn shame.Skorpy-chan wrote:

ha,good luck Bush, you'll need it.i don't know a single kid in my high school that doesn't download their stuff.
Record companies call pirates "rip-off artist", however the record companies are the ones who charge $20 for a CD with only 11 songs on it.
As for the "billions lost" I would like to say that at least 90% of music/movie/game pirates would not have legitly bought the product even if piracy wasn't an option. I mean Uzbekistan (who are asshole btw) and China are way to poor to buy the products legitly, so if they didn't pirate it then they would have never used it anyway.

Seriously, I don't know many people that pay for movies or music anymore. There's no way that some of those countries on the list don't get stuff illegally more than we do.S3v3N wrote:
We need to put ourselves on that list.
Internet Piracy FTW!

The government does a lot of things for the private sector. Pressure is just the tip of the iceberg.
We go to wars for the sake of war profiteers, so this kind of thing just comes with the territory.

1. This isn't about internet piracy, per se. At least, not what you and I think of Internet Piracy. The US government is not criticizing governments for allowing individual citizens to download movies/music/games/porn. Rather, this report is about governments that allow large scale piracy to go on. Things like bootlegging CD's and DVD's via a glass master process, large scale software replication and distribution, etc. Despite what the entertainment industry would like you to think, piracy of the guy-sitting-in-his-bedroom-and-downloading-type is not their money loser. It's bootlegs that you buy on the street for $5.<BoTM>J_Aero wrote:
Yeah, when I get my torrent for Heroes every week, I'm pretty sure it comes up an hour earlier than it's shown in the US because they show it in Canada first. And those Canadian uploaders are very quick off the bat.
Artists don't make shit from sponsorships. That's athletes. Artists make money from CD/DVD sales, touring, and merch. And that's about it. If they're lucky, their music might get featured in a commercial or movie or tv show, getting them some residuals.Mekstizzle wrote:
Oh cmon now, the whole world is in with this. This is stupid. Who gives a shit about artists anyway, it's already known they make most of their money from sponsors and other shit and not from the actual selling of records and whatnot.
Now, do they make much from CD sales? No, not relatively. They make a little. But it's better than nothing.
Sorry to play nasty capitalist, but the government's job is to represent the private sector on the world stage. It does that, or the "private sector" has to build up an army to go abroad and defend its rights. And we can bitch and moan about the artifically high price of CD's and DVD's, and how the music cartels don't respect the artists, yadda yadda yadda, but the point remains that millions of Americans are employed by these businesses, and the government has a vested interest in ensuring that their way of life continues.cpt.fass1 wrote:
