Decided to check out DXDIAG today, only to find that according to Windows, I am running DirectX 10.0!

when you update DX, you get the latest version. Your hardware will still work but without the dx10 features.
Kinda like incremental updates.

DX10 supports DX9... Do you get it?

I think vista has dx10 pre-installed on it because I have it on mine and i have a ATI x1300 pro graphics card:

The DXDIAG is for your software version of DX, not what capabilities you have for the hardware. Like other versions of DX, you don't need a card that supports to have it on your system, but you will if you want to utilize any functions of the newer API. Right now there are no DX10 titles, so it really is a mute point anyway.

not using DX10 effects or doing them on software (no hardware support). not a big deal righ now really since what even uses dx10 yet...

edit: anyways ya got dx10 on ur comp. everything is fine....
