Why oh why oh WHY does Jordan Rudess retreat to the back of the stage when he plays his überawesome solo in Octavarium on the Score DVD?

I just thought there are enough DT fans here to answer this....

I'm watching Score again and I really want to know why he would've done such a horrendous act.

He needed to scratch his balls without 45,000,000,000 people watching.

Hmmm... I guess I need to watch that DVD. Sad that I have not. I am a huge DT fan. That concert is among their best. I bought the CD and DVD but have only managed to watch about half of the first disc and some of the documentary.

So did he play it at the back of the stage or are you saying he was absent from the stage altogether?

Top left: Rudess doing his steel lap guitar solo in the beginning of octavarium - you can see how the guitar and his continuum fingerboard are oriented with the audience.

Top right: Midway through the song from far out, you can see Rudess' primary keyboard and the continuum/steel guitar rig to his right.

Bottom left: For the keyboard solo after movement Medicate, he's at the back of the stage (but still visible) where he's playing on a keyboard with the score taped onto the top... you can see the auditorium walls on the left, and his main equipment.

Bottom right: A view from one of Portnoy's cameras, where you can see Rudess in the far back.

I can give you a clue but no 100% answer Cool !

For all people that have ever stood on a stage like that have felt the immense heat from the lights directly above, i think he retreats a little to cool down when the difficult parts of his play are performed for better concentration !

Just a guess !

That's valid, although he has harder parts to play (I can play the solo shown above, but not his other stuff) that he does out in front. And Petrucci is always in the light, and Portnoy doesn't get enough credit - drumming takes the most out of you in these shows, I would know.

Still, that just might be the reason...

Normally I'd rant and rave at you, but I'll let someone else do that

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and tell you that people like him will only hurt themselves if they fake it.

Sounds good to me. I though he was completely off stage (not seen). I'd guess he needed something specific that was not on the main keyboard for that solo??? Yeah, drumming takes the most physical endurance.

DT rules!!! Hope to seem em live one day, too!

I'd make some snide comment about the 'faking it' comment but I dont want to sink to that level. Do your homework.
