Now don't get me wrong, a fight with Iran would cause $7/gallon gasoline (Petrol for you Brits), and cause a worldwide recession.  I'm all for the direct approach, as long as we do it with overwelming force, 500-600k troops instead of 145k with Iraq.

So barring the direct approach, perhaps the way to 'beat' them is make nice with them?  Or could we encorage the moderates in the country to overthrow the hardliners?

Iran has 15% unemployment vs. 4.4% in the United States.  Perhaps if the moderate Iranians got a taste of a good economy they might want to overthrow their government?

What do we need to do to get the Persians to do it themselves?  Is it even possible?

Diplomacy?  What a novel idea!

It's certainly a tough decision, war is good for the economy and high oil prices is bad.  Catch 22.

The best strategy to defeat Iran IMHO is to reduce dependence on oil, whilst finding alternatives.  Both will reduce demand for oil, thus forcing the price down and denying Iran income in the process.

Encourage the moderates in the country to overthrow the hardliners.

Diplomacy wont work here.
You need to have a common ground for it to work. An extremist theocracy and a democracy really don't much in common. Especially since the theocratic society considers everyone outside their control to be heretics and infidels.

We are doomed.
The US economy is a giant Ponzi scheme. And 'to big to fail' is code speak for 'niahnahniahniahnah 99 percenters'

Ok, so if the United States and other European Nations reduce their depence on oil (Germany gets alot of its oil from Iran btw), then it will be other countries who will still buy the oil - like the Asian minor countries and China.

Iran will still have lots of buyers unless some type of technology comes out that would undercut oil like 1 cent/kwh of nearly limitless electricity.

Since they will have buyers til the day the oils wells run dry, they will continue to use it to fund terrorism (Hamas, Hesbolla, etc...).

Iran may fix itself in the long run, but in the meantime, we're best off leaving foreign oil behind and moving full speed toward alternative energy sources.

I'd actually prefer Iran to occupy Iraq, because it would make it harder for them to devote much effort toward nuclear proliferation.

Well, remember a little country called Iraq?

It'd probably go something like that. Possibly much worse.
