The Choices: Some Background On The Two Main Parties

Fianna Fáil

https://www.fiannafail.ie/e07images/banner_topleft_quarter.gif

* Status: Incumbent since 1997, leading partner in ruling coalition with Progressive Democrats as junior partner.

* Party Orientation: Centre right (originally a left of centre party).

* History: Did not support partition of the island of Ireland agreed by Michael Collins with the British leading to the Irish Civil War in the 1920s.

* Leader: Bertie Ahern (current Taoiseach)

https://www.europaveien.no/bilder/844.jpg

* Campaign: 'The Next Steps' (www.thenextsteps.ie) - outlining how they will build on the successes of the last decade. Also using the popularity of the party leader heavily to promote local candidates - 'Vote for Bertie's Team' - despite the fact that he has been embroiled in a controversy over his own seemingly irregular financial transactions in the eighties (known as the 'Teflon' Taoiseach for emerging unscathed and even more popular after every controversy he is involved in!).

* Major Election Promises:
-->  U-turn: will now abolish stamp duty (tax) on homes purchased by first time buyers.
-->  Additional mortgage interest relief for first time buyers.
-->  Further tax-cuts: lower rate reduced from 20% to 18%, higher rate from 41% to 40%).
-->  Removal of salary ceiling for the payment of PRSI. Reduction in rate of PRSI. [PRSI = Pay Related Social Insurance]
-->  Increase state pension to €300 a week.
-->  Increase Garda numbers to 16000 by 2012.
-->  Continue 'No to Nuclear' stance.
-->  Third of electricity from renewable resources by 2020.

* Major Recent Achievements:
-->  Completion of Dublin port tunnel.
-->  Completion of M1 motorway to the 'border' with Northern Ireland.
-->  Completion of many major road projects across the country ahead of schedule and within budget.
-->  Completion of Luas commuter tram lines in southern Dublin.
-->  Government sponsored 'SSIA' savings scheme offering 25% interest p.a. to fight inflation (the accounts matured just in time for the general election incidentally.....).
-->  Massive economic growth unrivalled anywhere in Europe, massive inward investment, Ireland now No.2 software exporter in the world with one of the highest qualities of life and standards of living available today.
-->  Successfully progressed the Northern Ireland peace process to the stage where arch-enemies Sinn Féin and the British DUP will now sit together in a devolved parliament for the North.
-->  Major reductions in taxation across the board.
-->  Managed to achieve agreement on the text of the now defunct European Consitution when they held the rotating European presidency.
-->  Lowest unemployment rate in Europe.
-->  Gaeilge made an official EU language.
-->  Consistently posting gigantic budget surpluses.

* Criticisms:
-->  Healthcare system in disarray, nurses working to rule, hospitals overloaded to capacity (mainly due to immigration driven population explosion).
-->  Traffic gridlock in Dublin, refusal to eliminate tollbridge on M50.
-->  Bends over backwards for the USA (Shannon airport fly-throughs to Iraq deeply unpopular).
-->  Cost of living has spiralled dramatically out of control, gap between rich and poor widening.
-->  House prices have gone through the roof (mainly due to immigration driven population explosion).
-->  Crime on the increase (mainly due to immigration driven population explosion).
-->  Late delivery of Luas and Dublin port tunnel, both over budget.
-->  NUMEROUS allegations of corruption/dodgy dealing.
-->  Cost of electricity and energy in general has spiralled.

* Website:  http://www.fiannafail.ie/
Fine Gael

https://www.finegael.ie/images/banner.jpg

* Status: Main opposition party, lost power as part of the 'Rainbow Coalition' with Labour and the Green party in 1997.

* Party Orientation: Right wing (once sent troops 'The Blueshirts' to help General Franco in the Spanish civil war, mellowed since, 'rich farmer' party, worryingly anglophile).

* History: First party to govern the Irish free state, signed act which partitioned the island of Ireland in exchange for freedom leading to the Irish Civil War in the 1920s.

* Leader: Enda Kenny

https://www.finegael.ie/rep-images/ACF7788.jpg

* Campaign: Playing up Fine Gael's so-called 'Contract for a Better Ireland' between them and the people of the country. Posters with slogans like 'Health Services That Work. For A Change.' and 'Safer Streets. For A Change'. Lots of negative campaigning surrounding the financial shennanigans of the opposition leader, Bertie Ahern, and the fact Bertie had the president call the election by surprise at 5am on a Sunday morning!

* Major Election Promises:
-->  No change in rate of corporation tax (lowest in Europe) or capital gains tax.
-->  Higher capital spending.
-->  'Better and more cost effective' public services (good luck with that one lol).
-->  Free health insurance for all under-16s.
-->  Free doctor visits for children under 5.
-->  2300 additional hospital beds.
-->  100,000 more medical cards (free healthcare entitlement).
-->  2000 more Gardaí.
-->  Tougher sentences for criminals (prisons are overcrowded and sentences are being commuted quite a bit).
-->  Lower income taxes for EVERY taxpayer by increasing tax credits (min at which you start paying tax).
-->  Abolition of stamp duty on house purchases for first time buyers. Significant reduction in rates for others.

Damn, beaten to it.

Cam, is it possible for me to start my own Irish political party? I'd like to call it 'Epic Fail'.

'Fáil' is actually the Irish word for destiny lol. It's pronounced 'Fawl' or 'Foyl'. Fianna Fáil means 'Soldiers of Destiny'.

Roger roger.

Voted the Green party in this poll. Are they a marginal group in Ireland, or do they have a significant number of reps in the parliament?

They get enough seats to get into coalition governments sometimes. They get about 10% of the total vote.

The Choices: Some Background On...

The Progressive Democrats

https://www.progressivedemocrats.ie/images/pd-new-header-20070503-bg.jpg

* Status: Incumbent since 1997, junior partner in ruling coalition with Fianna Fáil as senior partner.

* Party Orientation: Fiscally and socially very conservative.

* History: Founded in 1985 by those disgruntled with then incumbent Fianna Fáil and others who were tired of overly socialist governments (party leader was once a Fine Gael activist).

* Leader: Michael McDowell (current Tánaiste)

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/1c/Michael_McDowell.jpg

* Campaign: 'Don't Throw It All Away' - a scaremongering campaign warning voters that if they were to allow the opposition into power our economic prosperity would be washed away.

* Major Election Promises:
-->  Anti-social behaviour orders to be introduced.
-->  Creation of garda reserve force made up of volunteers.
-->  Garda numbers up from 14,000 to 16,000.
-->  Major investment in extensive CCTV.
-->  Longer prison sentences.
-->  Development of a high-rise Manhattan style docklands area of Dublin.
-->  Lower burden on enterprise.
-->  Higher scrutiny of public services.
-->  Social housing for 60,000 households.
-->  Extra 50,000 childcare spaces by 2010 to help facilitate working mothers.
-->  Invest €60m in National Children's Strategy (??).
-->  Lower rate of income tax reduced to 18% from 20%, higher rate down to 38% from 41%.
-->  No new taxes on employment.
-->  Maintain same level of corporation tax (12.5%) and capital gains tax (20%).
-->  State pension increased to €300 a week.
-->  New rail lines in cities outside of Dublin, altantic corridor dual carriageway, deep port for Dublin, new orbital road for Dublin, Luas extensions.

* Major Recent Achievements:
-->  Same as Fianna Fáil.

* Criticisms:
-->  Same as Fianna Fáil.
-->  Militant approach to the public sector.
-->  Would privatise oxygen if it got the chance.
-->  Business > Humans.
-->  Mary Harney, former leader, is health minister: one aspect of public services which is in a poor state. Nurses are currently on strike country-wide looking for better pay for less hours - Harney won't budge.
-->  Michael McDowell, party leader, is justice minister: an aspect of public services which is in a poor state, has been accused of being almost Nazi-ish in his attempts to create a nanny state (with attempted restrictions on drinking and all manner of things), militantly anti-IRA & anti-Sinn Féin, a hate figure for many.

Perhaps it's Ireland's destiny to fail?  (just kidding)

Seriously though, I'd vote for a party completely independent of the unification debate.  Greens ftw.

How about NO ONE CARES!!

Ireland is an insignificant island in terms of geopolitics!!

Regardless who is voted in, it will be some socialist liberal. . . . .

My beloved Irish will continue to enjoy the benefits of the Euro, and thats that! I wish Ireland the best, as I am Irish, but I find it laughable that anyone they elect is going to seriously effect global politics.

For christs sake, they dont even own their entire country! I would focus on electing someone who promises to unite the island!!

Why don't you get off your fucking high horse for two seconds? This is what I mean: someone tries to post something that isn't about America and you get cockknocker attitudes like this butting in.

I wish you all the best with your 'geopolitics' bullshit. Nice job in Iraq. Congrats.

Would somebody create an 'America' subforum for people who don't want to think about anything outside US borders?

Sinn Féin, their campaign is quite progressive (legalisation of abortion, equality,...).

Any good news concerning Northern Ireland ? (like Paisley died or at least retired)

Paisley finally agreed to a devolved parliament in Northern Ireland that features Sinn Féin having come under extreme pressure since the IRA decommissioned all of its weapons.

You sure have all the answers dont you Cameron. . . .

I know I know. . .no blood for oil, halliburton, all Bush's fault blah blah blah blah blah

All everyone talks about here (on these forums) is United States and her politics. . . . The truth is no one cares about Irelands election but YOU! I personally dont care who gets elected there, cause the result is always the same.  Some socialist in a different suit!

How about you guys get complete independence from Britain, and show the world you guys arent their pawns!! Why not elect someone who "bucks" the status quo??

You seem to always have some vested interest in what happens in my country/policies! Why cant I put a cynical retort to your unimportant elections. . . .

I will talk to my Irish buddy tonight (he just flew in) and see what he thinks on your elections.  After a few Stella's he should be ripe with knowledge!!

Are the Progressive Democrats heavy pushers for Irish reunification? If I were in Ireland, I'd vote for either Fine Gael or the Progressive Democrats, but since I'm English I have to support the ones who aren't trying to wrest N. Ireland from the UK.

Typical FadedSteve dribble as always.

a) I think you'll find that there are threads up about the UK, France, Russia, Darfur, Palestine and various other nations and issues Steve. Perhaps you can't read sentences that don't feature the words 'America' or 'fucking sand-niggers'. We talk about a vast array of things here Steve - you can always go to the junk drawer if D&ST makes you uncomfortable by mentioning the outside world.

b) The Republic of Ireland is a fully independent and sovereign nation with no connection to the UK except that we're both member nations of the EU. Guess you're not so 'Irish' after all - because you haven't got the foggiest clue in hell about Ireland or Europe as far as I can see. But that would tie in logically with your inability to confront the existence of an outside world.

c) I only give a real and meaningful shit about US foreign policy. To be honest, I don't give that much of a shit about what happens inside your borders.
