If they are so quick in closing certain topics and temp banning people like me they don't need any help. Indeed, a community needs all its members to help out with identifying the bad posts unless said community wants to have a ton of moderators, which isn't necessarily good. The amount of mods we have is fine for the size of this site, it's up to us to help them out though. That said, they definitely do a good job IMO with their judgment.

Its people like you who probably got me banned in the first place. Report button is good in some situations, but it should not be the end all to every situation. This way it has great potential for abuse if a moderator relies too heavily on reports and biases their judgement. No thanks I like to leave the mods to make the call without my help. One of the mods responds. They check out the situation, and if it is what the report describes, they warn/temp ban/ perm ban the one reported.
Now, if Joe2's report is false, the admins punish him in some diabolical way. Not evil, but maybe an AWM - not too sure.
The admins, unless off duty, respond. Trust me.
Not one admin relies too heavily on the Report system. They're members of the community too. They help answer questions, they surf the forums, etc. Do you think they sit around all day for a report to come in?

No a reporting system certainly biases an admin's decision to punish or not. A post that may otherwise seem tolerable given general forum environment can be presented to an admin in such a way as to make it look especially bad or taken out of context. Furthermore, the pressure to uphold a certain individual's values or give retribution for so called "hurt feelings" certainly sways the decision of an admin. For instance if I was to add in a report about someone's post that I find the word "faggot" particularly offensive and will hold the admin to either tolerance or intolerance of these slurs then there's certainly more pressure for the admin to act. Look at all the crap in older threads that goes unedited just because no one bothered to report. To me this inconsistency just proves that the report system is flawed and leads to more arbitrary decisions than normal. I get warnings that flaming is not well tolerated in the forums, yet I see it everywhere, unpunished, on a daily basis. Let's at least be consistent here people.

I just think they need to find an acceptable level of flaming per say and stick to it. Like maybe calling someone a fag is over the line or maybe it isnt...
