ok, I just had this problem. Maybe this is already in the guide but...
{This is with windows XP and an Audigy 2 ZS card so it may differ from yours}
Control Panel/Sound Speech audio devices/Sounds and Audio Devices/
Click on the "audio" tab.
under "sound recording"
click on volume
go to the top right of the window in "options"
click on "advanced controls"
now go over to the microphone sound bar. Under it should be an "advanced" button.
Click it.
under OTHER CONTROLS click on the box next to +20db mic boost.
