I was brought up in 1980s Donegal - that was poverty. Much like Roscommon I would have imagined. Times have changed unbelievably. We now have almost zero unemployment, massive immigration and the highest levels of disposable income in the world. All the economic indicators suggest we have a great economy. The Economist magazine has Ireland as the country with the highest 'Quality of Life' in the world. Our government opened the SSIA scheme because we have so much money and we spend so much money that inflation was getting out of control!! I can't imagine many other governemnts giving 25% interest rates to ensure that you save money!!!
Sure everything looks like its on the up and up but in reality prices for everything here are at an all time extreme high. IMO this counteracts any benefit from higher wages or more disposable income.
The SSIA was conceived because at the time, the government needed money ASAP and it was a pretty good idea; that is untill pay day arrived and they realised the money needed to repay the people was not gonna come easy.
Look at the cost of a house in Dublin these days, and compare it to an average wage. God help anyone thinking about buying
The UN should totally give North America back to the Indians. We Americans can just move back to our respective homes in europe.
LOL. And we in turn can migrate back to the Caucasus mountains. And the ones that are there right now can piss off back to Africa. An so on and so forth.jonsimon wrote:

At least you do have high wages America IMO is on the brink of an economic disastor. Over spending, home value's through the roof, the stock market is hanging on by a thread inept political parties.c0ldfyr3 wrote:

By those criteria, I'd say we've been on the "the brink of an economic disaster" for twenty years.cpt.fass1 wrote:

But you say that the stock market is hanging on by a thread. What do you mean by that?

Who blew the cobwebs off this one?? I think you'll find immigration to the US tapered off when we became the best economy in Europe Hunter. In fact there are quite a few Americans immigrating to Ireland these days. My gf is Canadian even. I never realised you were so petty.

Why do did so many Irish immigrate here in the 19th Century? Really it was to take a chance in the "land of opportunity." It was in much better shape than Ireland and evern after they came here they faced all sorts of discrimination not only from nativists for being an immigrant but also from the Protestants who were upset with the heavy drinking of the immigrant Catholics from Germany and Ireland. Still, play nice.Hunter/JumperWhy do so many Irish imagrate here? hmm.
