This is meant as a positive thread.  Take it negative if you wish, but if set it aside if you can...

Simply put...ask your question...in hope...

Why haven't we:
-solved hunger?  There's no reason why people need to be hungry.  Move the people or move the food...seems simple.

-stopped racism?  A progressive society involves a society with differences and inequities, in which new ideas form from differences of opinion - why is this determined to be a detriment?

-space colonies?  We have the technology - why haven't we started...at least with the moon?

Sorry folks, been spending a lot of time doing the philosophy thing lately

Same reason there are solutions for hair and hard-ons but not cancer or aids.

Why haven't we:
-synthesized neutronium?
-stopped glaciers?
-found alien intelligence?

Hunger: We already move the people. Usually elsewhere.
Racism: We're making some progress here, but give society time. Our rate of technological growth can fool you. In some ways, other aspects of our culture haven't caught up.
Space Colonies: We have neither the technology nor the know-how to set up safe, permanent colonies off our planet. It's like knowing how to hollow out a log for a canoe...but for the purpose of a sailing thousand round-planet circuits across our oceans. We need to make more advances in the field of life support and broad-spectrum Earth-norm emulation before seriously considering setting up cities out there. Not to mention shielding...

We could've probably been a bit far beyond had Bush Jr. been able to do what he wanted with the whole mission to Mars bit...but alas, we're busy in the Middle East now.

Well from your questions I seee that you need to do a bit of the "research thing" in addition to the "philosophy thing".

The problem is that, in areas that cannot support large populations such as Africa, there is no such thing as birth controll.  Hell I don't know what I would do if I lived in such a dirt poor country either.  Anyway the problem is that when we feed the existing starving people, they reproduce and the country's population explodes exponentially.  This creates even more people to feed, doing more damage.  The problem with attempting to feed people from other countries is that we override the population cap that nature has put in place, and we create a population that becomes unsustainable without outside help, and then leads to the 1st thing I was talking about.

Stopped Racism???  How do you suggest we go about doing about that?

Space colonies? We have nowhere near neither the technology, nor the money for such a venture.  On average, it takes 1 million USdollars to take 1lb of somthing into space, and that is only temporarily.

Solved hunger?: Because of the terrain of the land. Africa is desert, and where theres a desert, theres sand, and where theres sand, you usually cannot grow much there.

Racism: No idea. Just idiots and some history to affect us I assume.

Space living: Look at Doom, I dont want to go and fight in hell.
Really: Too expensive, too much time to waste. I would only resort to space living if it was last resort to mankind. Even then, Id say we are pretty much screwed then anyway. Id shoot myself if I had to live in space and there was no Earth.

  • Hunger - We have solved it in the US. Why not in Africa? Well, to start off with, those who are in power systematically deny food (both produced there and imported) to their opposition. You're enemy can't attack you if he's starving to death. Not to mention, hard to recruit sympathizers if you know the punishment is you don't get to eat. And then you get to Deadmonkiefart's point about population. He's right on with the paradoxes involved in feeding starving africans. You're denying mother nature her most effective tool at population control.
  • Racism - Technology can change overnight. A person's attitudes can span generations. As time goes by, the factor of race will gradually become less important. That being said, there is a reason stereotypes are associated with certain races. When you hear someone talking about a gang, the first image that pops to mind is NOT the sharks and the jets facing off in a rumble. The African-American community is responsible for the glamorizing of the criminal lifestyle. The other side of that is that racism does evaporate over time. Look as the acceptance of those of asian descent in the US, that crazy fucker at Virginia Tech to the contrary. There was a tremendous racist bias against asians at the turn of the 19th century that has been almost totally erased. There is no good way to change the way people think.
  • Space Colonies - We are nowhere near the point where a permanent settlement is feasable. There will have to be a reason for a colony (we discovered oil on the moon) before enough is invested in the technology to make it feasable.
