you're system would have to be heating up a lot.  From my experience with it, they stay fairly cool.

What's the inside temp of your system?

I'd say it is a driver problem.

To answer you question - yes, that can probably happen.

However, as Chipmunk and CrazeD imply - it's unlikely to be heat.

Check you've got the latest drivers for your sound card and mobo.

Could also be an incompatability with Vista.

Actually I'm running it as well, and I like it a lot better than xp.. drivers are a little buggy though, I will admit.  Have you downloaded the newest ones from Creative.com?

I admire the Creative Labs for neither their hardware nor software. It is a combination of luck (little competition) and their business practices that has lead them to be so "compatible" with everything else. That being said, the Audigy 2 ZS is probably the sweet spot when it comes to gaming sound, at the moment. At the same time, I find it hard to recommend the A2ZS when there is newer stuff available, and when this stuff can sound better...if all is working. But the X-Fi series, for all its capabilities, is plagued by driver issues. Hopefully by the time I throw together a new rig, it'll all be smoothed out...right.

Right click on the little speaker icon in the systray (next to clock on taskbar) and select 'Open Volume Mixer' - this will open a window with lots of volume control sliders on it - do any of the 'mute' buttons have a 'no entry' symbol on them?

I have one of the X-Fi Fatal1ty Platinum soundcards and I've never had a problem with it. The main problem with Vista is that it makes high-end sound cards like X-Fi absolutely worthless because it's considered premium content. Sounds are ran through a lot of Vista's filters before they ever get to the card for processing, so by that time the quality has been destroyed and you get nothing more than onboard motherboard sound quality. Things like EAX and some of the other features also get disabled. This may have something to do with your problem.... but then again I've not checked up on soundcards and Vista in a while, so they may have fixed this, but I'm doubting it.
