I currently have a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, running on an AMD Sempron 3000+ with 2 gigs of RAM.

Yes I know, my system sucks. I'd like to build an entirely new system, but I don't have the money for it. Sure I'll be getting a job with lots of hours over the summer, but I need to save and spend my money elsewhere (I'm a college student, money is hardly expendable). So the only option for me is to upgrade my graphics card. Unfortunately I'm stuck with AGP (built my computer 2 years ago). I'm real sick of playing BF2 on low graphics (I'd like to upgrade the processor as well since I'm sick of waiting 5 minutes for a map to load), and I'd like to be able to fly around in a heli on SF without having lag spikes (though I don't get them on vanilla).

So what are your suggestions? I'd like to be able to play everything on high if possible, but that'll probably just make my load time even longer...

[However, if it is possible to build a whole new system under $1000, I'd definitely do that]

Uh... is that motherboard socket A? You can't do much with that if it is.

You can build an entire new system for a grand

Nothing worth buying that wont bottleneck like a motherfucker on that CPU , best AGP is an ATi x1950 but you wont get the most of it out of that setup.

Yeah Manual says it's Socket A (socket 462) for AMD Athlon/XP/Duron @ FSB 266/333/400.

I was hoping to avoid buying a whole new system since BF2 is the only modern PC game I play, so it'd be a waste to get a whole new system just for this one game. But I guess if I do upgrade my system I'd be interested in other games as well.

Thanks for the help though

And yeah, I figured my processor would fuck me up a lot. Even if I did get high graphics, it'd take forever to load and would probably crash

If you do go with a new rig best bang for buck CPU atm is the Intel C2D e6600,

If you dont want to go mental and buy a whole new rig get one of these. It'll let you get a good CPU and use your old graphics card and RAM til you can afford better, it'll also take the new stuff you buy too.

No point in spending money on a DX9 card when DX10 is out heh

no point wasting money on a DX10 card unless your getting Vista before you're gonna be due another upgrade too but, yeh it is a point worth considering if you do want to get vista soonish.

You should upgrade your mobo and processor instead of your grapchis card.

I would like to get a DX10 card even though I don't plan on getting Vista any time soon. It'd just be nice to have for when I eventually get Vista. If I'm gonna get a whole new system, I'd like it to last as long as possible without having to upgrade.

This is what I got to replace my Radeon 9600.  My computer started to get all fucked up for no particular reason about a week before I installed it so perhaps you'll have better results than I did.

Hey thanks! :-D Karma for you! I don't plan on building the system until mid-summer, though. Heh and you went and did the work for me I was planning on spending a lot of time doing lots of research, but you went and did it all. I'll definitely look into those components, and if some newer/better ones come around by the time I'm ready to build, I'll get those.

I recently bought an ATI x1300pro. I can play with everything on medium except AA, that's turned off. It cost me $130 dollars.
