LONDON (Reuters) - A British man who went on a wild spending spree after doctors said he only had a short time to live wants compensation because the diagnosis was wrong and he is now healthy -- but broke.

John Brandrick, 62, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer two years ago and told that he would probably die within a year.

He quit his job, sold or gave away nearly all his possessions, stopped paying his mortgage and spent his savings dining out and going on holiday.

Brandrick was left with little more than the black suit, white shirt and red tie that he had planned to be buried in when it emerged a year later that his suspected "tumor" was no more than a non-life threatening inflammation of the pancreas.

"When they tell you you've got a limited time and everything, you do enjoy life," Brandrick, from Cornwall in the west of England, told Sky television.

"I'm really pleased that I've got a second chance in life... but if you haven't got no money after all this, which is my fault -- I spent it all -- they should pay something back."

If he can't get compensation, he is considering selling his house or suing the hospital that diagnosed him. The hospital has said that while it sympathizes with Brandrick, a review of his case showed no different diagnosis would have been made.

Interesting, anyone else seen this?

I heard that on the radio.  He should sue.  Not for millions but maybe a few hundred thousand so he can get his house and job back.

It could very well be that the act of being selfless and charitable (giving all his stuff away) cured him of the cancer.  It's an interesting story.

haha - now he'll get it back when he files a law suit!
i contend he has never been happier than when he was giving his things away and living to live, if you will.

He should at least get compensation for what he spent. I'd be happy with that.

It's a tough one. As far as mistakes go, if you had a choice, I'd rather they said I was going to die and find out they were wrong than being told I'm fine and a year later find out the diagnosis was wrong and I have terminal cancer. That happened here in NZ where a doctor misdiagnosed several smear tests. Two women thought they were fine and a year later were told they have cervical cancer and it is now too far gone to do anything about it. If the diagnosis had been right, they would have been able to be operated on.

As for this guy, what Miller said.

Come on guys, use your brains.  As a small business owner, I feel for the guy, but he doesn't deserve anything, unless the hospital showed gross malice in mis-diagnosing him, then he is entitled to squat!  So what now then, huh, are all hospitals that diagnose people going to have to give them pamphlets telling them not to go out and live it up and blow their life savings?  Or maybe make you sign a release form that you agree not to go on a spending spree and then sue the hospital if you live?

People need to accept responsibility for their actions.  Period.

Unless the Dr. was drunk or high when he diagnosed the guy then this guy needs to drop his case.  You Brits have a public or private healthcare system?  If it's private, FYI, it's things like this that will soon make it unaffordable for the common man.

Good lord. At what point did you all decide to totally abandon personal responsibility?

If only House was diagnosing him...

It is a tough decision. I would favour the hospital, though.

Fair enough. If you export the chavs over here though, I just might have whoop some ass.

Speaking of which, I know some rednecks over here that would be more than happy to come over there and sort out your chav problems. All you'll have to do is pay for the plane tickets, and feed them cold beer and fish and chips.

Great that's just what we need, some idiot getting thousands of tax payers money for his mistake.

Does this guy not realise the NHS is cash strapped as it is????

P.S When he stopped paying his mortgage he was breaking the law so he has no moral leg to stand on IMO.

I almost feel bad for him. But he even said himself that it was his fault he spent all his money. And besides, I really hate those fucking idiots who sue over every little thing. He should be happy that his diagnosis was wrong, not start suing people over it. Fucking moron, now I really hope that tumor of his becomes cancerous and he dies.

He is just passing on responsibility.. what a cock. He chose to spend crap loads of money, rather than living it up a bit and putting somethings away for his family.

Think about what you would honestly do in his situation.  Perhaps he has life insurance which will take care of things for his family.

He should get some compensation for the misdiagnoses but asking for allot more on the premise that you were so stupid as to spend all your money sets a bad precedent.
