France goes conservative Americans Cheer Election of U.S. - Friendly Sarkozy

``We can foresee the time when there will be new diplomatic disputes between the French and the United States -- notably on the Middle East “

French Voters Pick Sarkozy to Be President; Turnout High

EI ( a third party candidate didn't swing votes )

If you have any sense of history, you will remember  Ronald Reagan was equally vilified and protested.

" He will start World War Three “  of course he didn't instead, He won the cold war.
His economic policy was mocked in the Media as  " Reaganomics "  Until it kicked in and worked.

Than it was relabeled " the Recovery "

He revitalized our economy and the rising tide lifted all boats.

IE ( minorities did very well under him, and the underclass became middle class )

Of course time will tell. Until then the Media will continue to trash Sarkozy in the U.S.

Its all worth it to see the liberal kids wet themselves. No doubt they will check in.

Only time will tell on how he is, but on his policy's that I read in the paper today I can't really fault him.

Just wish we had a strong leader here in the UK, but it doesn't look like we will get one come next election, I really don't rate David Cameron softly softly approach.

You'd have to ask a republican that.

I was talking about their government. The socialists haven't been in power for ages, mainly due to shite candidates. Royale was their best bet and did remarkably well; probably why her loss was such a bitter pill to swallow for her supporters.

France will be the center of attention for some time to come, as several countries in Europe swings to the left politically France does the exact opposite as usual.

Sarkozy have promised to turn the country around in 100 days and he most certainly will one way or the other

He simply had no competition imo. Ségolène was way too "wishy-washy". She just promised way too much, and had no real perception of reality in her campaign. It's no surprise to me.

Also the fact that she is a woman has to be taken into consideration to why she lost, people of France said themselves they are not quite ready for a female head of state.

I dunno - Germany did it, Switzerland has been there for a long time...
She was a pretty woman who was kind and all - so that spoke for her. But as I said, she was waaaay too unrealistic.

If it could actually be possible I think that Sarkozy is far far more of a hate figure in France than Chirac. Those that dislike him hate him with such a passion that it will spill over into violence from time to time. His bullshit speech about 'moving forward together' and 'we are united' was so patronising and such a brazen crock of shit that it almost made me barf. I can only imagine what those who didn't vote for him thought of it.

If he thinks he can change France's public sector and social welfare system then fair play to him if he can - because believe you me the left in France will NOT take it lying down. Expect strikes on a weekly basis. This could cripple France if he plays his cards wrong.

Sarkozy is supposed to be a little more conservative than Chirac. I suspect the Islamists living there won't be terribly happy with him. We'll have to see how well he handles himself and whether he can be a conservative AND still maintain healthy relationships with his public.

I suspect CameronPoe is correct. There could be quite a few strikes. Hopefully that won't be the case.

I don't hate him, I hate his ideas.

He is a liberal, he will privatize (or at least begin it) the social security and other vital things. The Chirac government already sold part of the roads, suppressed beds in hospitals, partially privatize the French gas provider (to a ridiculous price...) and other things.

It simply doesn't work, as long as greed will be the goal. We know what happened when Thatcher privatized the English rail and I could come with more examples.

He will have to secure a majority in the French House of Representatives or he becomes a lame duck.  The elections in the summer will tell how much he can do.

Here's what I find funny about the whole "conservative/liberal" divide between Europe and America.

In the bedroom and other aspects of personal life, Europe is more liberal than us, but when it comes to citizenship, America is MUCH more liberal.  So, to see Sarkozy as being significantly more conservative than usual is kind of misguided.  France is like many other European nations when it comes to strict citizenship and labor laws.  It's MUCH easier to find work in America as an immigrant than in most of Europe -- you don't even have to be a legal immigrant these days.

A friend of mine from Bosnia lived in Germany for a few years before moving to America.  He told me in great detail how there are different levels of citizenship in Germany.  Immigrants and even the children of immigrants who are born in Germany can never reach the level of citizenship that a native-born German has.  In America, this would be seen as blatantly racist.

So, this puts things in perspective when it comes to what is "conservative" in Europe.  They don't care what you do in your bedroom, but they do make a clear distinction between "natives" and immigrants.  Sarkozy is just more blatant about it than most, despite his own immigrant heritage.

You also have to remember that most European conservatives would be considered moderates in economic policy compared to American economic conservatives.

It's like how most social liberals here would be considered social moderates or conservatives in Europe.

I don't think Sarkozy and Merkel represent a major swing in conservatism for Europe in the American sense of that word.  I think it has more to do with more conservative outlooks on immigration in a continent already known for its strict views on this issue.

Basically, it's Europe's way of dealing with Islamism without going to war.  Personally, I think it makes a lot more sense than what we've done.  Still, countries like France will need to lessen their prejudice in the long run.  They could stand to be more liberal when it comes to racial and cultural integration.  That's the kind of liberalism that America prides itself on, Sean Hannity be damned.
