Yes.  But...

If we would have just leveled Iraq, which we are very capable of doing.....that would have made him happy according to his rules.
And that would have been perfectly acceptable in 500 BC..

Which is why his book needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

I know, my response was a retort to the previous poster.

You see, it's a bad habit...
"In the practical art of war, the best thing of all is to take the enemy's country whole and intact; to shatter and destroy it is not so good. So, too, it is better to recapture an army entire than to destroy it, to capture a regiment, a detachment or a company entire than to destroy them."

Of course, you have to realize the circumstances of war he was referring to. Your quote was moot because it only applies to wars that are dragged on. This war is not being dragged on. But trying to make deadlines because of the ballot box is suicide.

In all honesty, if you're going to commit to war, you might as well destroy an enemy and then leave.  Nation building doesn't make much sense.

(Your article)"Gates and his military leaders have said that commanders in Iraq will make judgments in September whether the buildup has been successful and should continue or if troops could begin coming home. "

I never suggested a deadline. What I am questioning is our strategic goal.
