Any Aussies got any thoughts yet?

Its looks to me as a desperate grab at youth votes.

Why are they suddenly spending the surplus? Cos its an election year!!

Having said that ANOTHER tax cut is always welcome

It's a desperate grab at everyone's votes. I noticed that they haven't really done anything special for defence though, the budget still seems to be the same. I think they figure because the boys and girls are getting some shiny new toys, that they dont need extra spending for things like TRAINING and super.

I think the gov is scared and they are trying to buy some last minute votes. You are right, tax cuts and more spending is great, but I think it might be too late for them. Apparently there are massive rebates on home solar power etc, and some baby bonuses too. Besides all this the new IR laws are about as popular as a dog turd, so they have their work cut out for them.

Re tax cuts and IR laws.

Firstly tax cuts, yeah , it would be great to have a free packet of smokes each week. And IR, well Your right on the dog turds, it'll be interesting to see how far Rudd, (should he get in), go tp repeal those pathetic laws.

I'll have $20 on Rudd not doing much about IR, they're in the pockets of Big Business just as much as the fascist right.

Like his internet policy tho, FIBRE!

Sorry dude but you are very wrong and I'm guessing you aren't in the Defence Industry or you would have known the following:

"In working to this plan, a further $14.0 billion has been allocated over ten years in this year's Budget to build a better equipped, more mobile and operationally ready Defence Force.

The boost to funding comes on top of the $4.1 billion allocated for the enhanced land force initiative, which will establish an extra two Army battalions. An additional $1.0 billion was also allocated to Defence recruitment and retention in December 2006.

This is the seventh budget in a row that the Government has met or exceeded its 2000 Defence White Paper funding commitment.

Since the Coalition Government came to power in 1996, the Defence budget has increased from $10.6 billion in 1995-96 to $22.0 billion in 2007-08, which represents a real increase of about 47% during this time."

Howard and Costello are just scared of losing this election so they are (once again) treating us like fools by throwing money at us so we will vote for them.

Nice try guys, but it hasn't won me over.

I actually like this budget. It is nowhere near as drastic as it was last year. This is the speech for the budget. Here is a basic summary.

At the very least, it's good that they've managed to keep it in surplus - the first job and most important one for any government (although that may not entirely be their doing). I was actually surprised at how conservative and withheld the budget actually seemed. I think they're waiting and watching to see reactions, then they'll go for the big kills in about August-October.

Of course its a grab at votes. If Labor were in power they would do the EXACT SAME THING.

And they always spend the surplus, its happened the last two years at least.

I think the $700 voucher for external tuition for failing students was really good. Also the $5 billion slush fund for the universities - god knows UWS needs some more cash.

Was very impressed with the tax free threshold moving up to $11 000, and wasnt happy with the purchase of the super hornets - i want F22s dammit!
