No real discussion here.  Just a reminder that you all should start questioning your ISP to see if they are making plans for the conversion to IPv6.  According to the recent ARIN meetings it's going to happen in the states MUCH sooner than expected due to the near exhaustion of current (IPv4) addresses.

This change is NOT going to be trivial.  You should start poking your ISP today to get ready.

good idea, though i have a feeling that you lot will have IPv9 by the time they implement it here.
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

Essentially ip addresses are going to be longer.

Longer IP addresses. Allowing for more computers on a network. With BIG networks, like the internet, the current IP addressing system does not allow for enough nodes (only 4,294,967,296), hence a new system needs to be implemented in order to add more and more computers. This new system is IPv6. IPv6 allows for LOTS more computers to be addressed.

Not on a wide scale.

Hence the continued usage of 255.255.255.255 format IP addresses.

"IPv4 supports 232 (about 4.3 billion) addresses, which is inadequate for giving even one address to every living person, let alone supporting embedded and portable devices. IPv6, however, supports approximately 5×1028 addresses for each of the roughly 6.5 billion people alive today"

Thats a lot of laptops per person!

So if it happens in the states soon but not other places, will that cause compatibility issues between computers with different addressing systems?

I shouldnt think so. Im pretty sure that Network Engineers and Admins will prolly use NAT/PAT to
ensure that everything will work fine.

*EIGRP, RIP, should have thrown the Routers off the Uni roof* bitch complain last time I study Cisco* Friggin NAT whine mutter mutter*
