I'm about to buy Vista on eBay. I have this processor:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6819103771

Will I need to get the 64 bit version or the 32? Just wondering.

Thanks.

32 Bit = Allows you to use 32-Bit Programs and 16-Bit programs and apparently has less driver issues.
64 Bit = Future. Allows you to use 32 and 64-Bit, but not 16-Bit as far as I know.

I have 32!

What would a 16-bit program be?

As I said on IRC, 64bit. 64bit is the future.

EDIT: BTW, 16bit programs are from the Windows 3.1 days. I guarantee you you have no 16bit programs.

64 bit would allow you to access greater amount of memory ... but ... all of your 32bit apps (which is probably all of them) are in essence emulated so they will still have the 3.*GB cap.

IMO it's a novelty at this point for most.

So.... it's not worth getting 64 bit?  I'm in the same boat as this guy; I plan to purchase Vista soon, and I didn't know what to buy.  My comp only has 2 GB (2 x 1 GB), so would I be missing out on anything assuming I wanted to add 2 more 1 GB sticks while running 32 bit in the future?

With 32 bit versions of Windows you can use 3.24GB of RAM.
Even if you have have a 64 bit OS and lets say 8 GBs of ram, your 32bit apps will not be able to use more than it would be able to on a 32bit platform.

Ah.  I have two more questions.  I've heard there are compatibility issues with 32 bit programs on 64 bit (i.e. you cant use them).  Is this true?  And would you recommend getting 32 bit or 64 bit?

On a 64 bit OS, your 32 bit apps are emulated, which means there is a performance cost since the OS has to fool the 32 app into thinking it is on a 32bit platform. There is no rule that says they are completely incompatable.

IMO I would go 32 for now ...

64bit CPU - 64bit Vista.
32bit CPU - 32bit Vista.

Or buy retail - you'll receive 32bit, but you can then send away for 64bit...

I have 64 bit vista and i like it. I think if your going to get vista you may as well get the 64bit as 32bit is just xp with glitter. but i've only just done my first system build last month sso i dont really know much about the pros and cons. oh and i run mine on 2gig ram and only geforce6 ain't got the 8 serise yet and I'm still the first one on bf2 servers every-time.....sooo far.

Um.. aren't both version included? Mine was at least.

Jsnipythe specific amount of ram that shows under a 32 bit environment depends on your hardware configuration. I have seen it show over 3.75 with lesser hardware taking up minimal address space.

I'd definately get 64-bit edition, you'll be pissed off in 6 months when loads of games and apps are released that you don't get the best from because you don't have 64-bit.

Crysis will run better on Vista 64-bit. Does that help make your mind up?

The amount ram under 32bit was an assumption (I was just looking at my laptop which has 4 in it, but not all avail).

I have access ot all of the version, I'm not certain how they retail.

Well, I'm just going on what Microsoft say - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/2 … fault.mspx - or is that just for upgrade versions maybe?

Ah, also do you have 'Ultimate' ? (you get both versions with ultimate, but not with the lesser packages, it seems)

i dunno. depends on what you want it for. ultimate has all the glitter and home is the basic and premium just adds glitter to the basic home(sidebar toys and stuff).lol
