Home Premium 64-bit I reckon. Ultimate is a lot more money, for not a lot more content.scottomus0 wrote:
So which is the best to get, home or ultimate or any other?
anyone quick question how do you take a screen shot of you desktop? can i be done? may be a stupid question but I'd like to know?
I'm in the same boat, too. I need a laptop for college... can't decide what to get. Vista makes it all so damn confusing lol
To above poster: hit "print screen" on your keyboard, open your favorite paint thing (ie: MS Paint or PS or whatever) and paste it in.

Kmarion: as far as what windows reports being different with 4GB, were you referring to this?jsnipy wrote:

Jsnipythe specific amount of ram that shows under a 32 bit environment depends on your hardware configuration. I have seen it show over 3.75 with lesser hardware taking up minimal address space.
I have access to all of the version, I'm not certain how they retail.
I'm not certain what aspect of hardware could cause this value to fluctuate.

Does Vista take a whole lot more RAM to operate? I do a lot of photo editing plus some gaming and I don't know if I should get 4 GB instead of 2 GB of RAM. IE: would I get totally faced if I didn't get 4 GB?
i got 2gig and that runs fine on vista. hasn't slowed down on any thing i've done yet. but i do find that more ram than i'd like is being used by vista.
Great, thanks.
note though my 'ram clock' on vista tells me that 300-750ram is used on idle(most of the time). and at the mo i'm using 40% of the 2gig. but that could be my bad oc skills as i am a novice. hope that helps a bit more?

I have 64bit ultimate and I've had no compatibility issues with 32bit software. Get the 64bit.
My understanding was 64-bit is actually a 32-bit chip with 64-bit instructions/extensions, like MMX. In essence there is no 'hit' on running 32 or 64 bit programs. That and I've played BF2 happily on Vista HP 64 (with 1GB and a TurboCached 7300GS).jsnipy wrote:
On a 64 bit OS, your 32 bit apps are emulated, which means there is a performance cost since the OS has to fool the 32 app into thinking it is on a 32bit platform. There is no rule that says they are completely incompatable.
IMO I would go 32 for now ...
Your biggest issue with Vista 64 is drivers.
As for RAM, what do you consider a comfortable amount of RAM? On XP, I would say the minimum was 512, but for Vista 1024. You may think 1024 was comfortable on XP or even 2GB. This is not to say Vista needs double, but an extra 300MB or so more than on XP seems to suit it just fine.
Oh and Retail has 32 and 64 on the one disc, but OEM you buy which one you want.
My state was founded by Batman. Your opinion is invalid.
i got OEM sorry i should have said that. and if you wana play bf2 on vista your have to run the game with admin rights ticked or you will get kicked soon as you get on server.
and yes i find the only problem i have is the drivers.

No. I'm pretty sure he was talking about hardware address space. Each bit of hardware will use a bit of memory as address space. Memory usage for I/O memory maps will vary between different machines, but not by much.jsnipy wrote:

Your understanding is right. Typical 64-bit CPUs are based around the x86_64 architecture (or Intel's version EM64T), which is not a true 64-bit architecture. The code they run is still basically IA32 code (with a few additions), rather than true 64-bit CPUs like the Itanium which runs IA-64 instructions.Cheez wrote:

Very VERY much. Thanks a lot. +1Bertster7 wrote:
I'd definately get 64-bit edition, you'll be pissed off in 6 months when loads of games and apps are released that you don't get the best from because you don't have 64-bit.
Crysis will run better on Vista 64-bit. Does that help make your mind up?
Well I got Vista in the mail today (won't get it installed till October, stupid, don't ask why) and it's 32-bit. So it should run all of my programs just fine?
Except for the few program glitches, which are easy to fix.
EDIT: Just read bertsers reply. So does this mean I won't be able to run newer games? If so, I want to send it back and get Vista 64-Bit.

Keep your 32-bit version, I think you'll need to register it, then go here and order the 64-bit version too.Ryan wrote:
