Poll above.

1. No one knows how many undocumented immigrants are in the US. 12 million is the "magic number" but is flawed because no one can truly tell, hence the "undocumented worker" tag.

2. No one knows how many drug dealers are in the US. Weather it be heroin, weed, crack etc.

So which of these truly unknown factors hurts our economy and the average American family the most?

What's with all the illegal love you've been dishing out lately?

Obviously illegals are a bigger problem as they don't tend to have large families on welfare and medical.

wow, thats a hard one. i know more people that slang dope than i do illegals.........but still i find it hard to believe.....well maybe not.

but you would have to figure it like this.....most of the people that slang dope dont do it to make a profit, they do it for the free dope.....figure at least half, probably more dont do it for money.

ya, the illegals win for me.....ive seen a lot of the dope game, but nothing to make me think more money is lost there than illegals.

I'll go with drug dealers.

Reason is that the illegal immigrants don't really make a lot of money, so the taxes they would pay would be minimal, as well as the burden on social security they would be if they were official. They create wealth in the US. Also the US economy would have a hard time functioning without all the Mexicans. From an economic stand point they are actually beneficial.

Drug dealers on the other hand are bad for the economy, as consuming drugs generally lowers productivity as well as put a burden on the health care system. Also they induce crime which is not beneficial for the economy

why its the drug dealers of course, they screw up families, then make those people screw up other families by inviting them into their world or just breaking into their house or things like that.
and then of course they get some illigal immigrants hooked and they can no longer do their dodgy jobs so both those on the legal side and the illigal side loose out.
and the drug dealers win and retire to cambodia.

Clarify this please ATG. I swear Im not reading it right.

I read it as illegals are the bigger problem because drug dealers have families on welfare and medical.

???

Did I interpret that right?

A drug dealer living off of your taxes via welfare, medicare is not a bigger problem than illegals not using those resources?

Most drug dealers put their money back into the American economy. The small timers anyways. Most illegals send their money back to their native country.

Debatable.

Some drug dealers may send thier profit to Canada or Mexico. Some even to Jamaica. Small time would be what Parker said about being able to do thier drug of choice for free by dealing.

Most illegals do send money back home. Not alot though is needed considering the peso/dollar exchange. Plus illegals need to pay the hotel bill/rent, clothes and food.

But ALL of this is largely unknown, because we truly don't know the numbers of people we're dealing with in either format.

I respect your opinion.

I thought the same as you, how can they put a figure on it when you are dealing with an unknown quantity, like a stat I heard the other day, 1 in 5 have diabetes and don't know it.

However I asked a guy studying stats and he reckons they can get quite accurate figures with the right mathematics.  So for the diabetas example they would look at the number of people that doctors see who have the disease but were unaware of it and then factor in the people who don't go to the doctors etc.

With illegal immigrants, it would be based on the amount caught and some very complicated maths to factor in things like density of population etc.

The guy assures me they are accurate but I'm still skeptical.

Do you ever think about how many businesses would go bankrupt if they didn't have cheap workforce ?

I work illegally in Austria (I'm here legally) and out of dozens of employers I had, I cant think of any one of them that was doing good enough to able to employ only legal workers. In Austria, at least, he would have to pay them twice as much plus 50+% of the salary to the state (social security, pension etc).
Most employers go 50:50 legal:illegal. If they couldnt, the firm would go bankrupt and you would get the owner and the half of the workforce (legal ones) unemployed. Unemployed = social welfare.

I dont pay income tax, but much of my money goes to the state anyway. College tuition, social security I pay for my self, transportation, appartment tax, gas/water/electricity etc. Not to mention that out of every € I spend, percentage goes for tax.

Its an educated guess at best.

Drug Dealers.  Not because of the Tax free issue, but the impact they have on their users.  Emergency rooms, social services, detention, prisons, robberies/assaults/murders, jury system.  A drugged individual will be less productive, contributing less that his/her potential.
