It wont die, it will just start all over again with BF3
I doubt it will 'die' in the sense that EA will pull the plug, at least not for a long time. Now smoothing things out for modders in the upcoming patch will likely lull people away from ranked gaming.
The great fun about BF2 is the stats and the ranked system, why would people get away from that playing mods?? And booster packs will be released twice a year or even more.... I hope the fun never ends
I imagine that eventually EA will stop supporting the stats, but probably not until very few people are playing. Maybe when BF3 comes out. Lets enjoy it until then.
DF:BHD is over 6 or so years old and still going (they have stats. Ea got their stats system from them in fact.) hell DF2 though it doesn't have stats is still going and it's even olders around 7 or 8 years i believe.
So likely it will be a loooong time before bf2 dies. Hell we could see a bf 5 before it does. (df2 is still going strong even with df:bhd out which is the 5th ver. And if you coud jo thats 6 generations. though JO was a good idea, but never done right.)

Stats in my opinion will continue until it's not cost effective for EA to maintain stat servers. I learned this lesson with MCO (motor city online) It still bothers me that EA cut our throats so soon with that game but, the fact is Electronic Arts is a business and they run it like one. because believe it or not there are some pretty cool mods being developed right now and even some finished one that are waiting for EA to release its patch fixing some issues with mod capability.Stratocaster wrote:

I'm certainly not saying regular BF2 isn't awesome, but mods will bring a lot of variety.

The day that EA and/or Dice announce they will no longer support/hold the ranked system and/or servers, I'm going to start one of those online petitions, circulate it on here, TotalBF2, and other places, to request the information and data necessary to continue the service be transferred to either Jolt, TotalBF2, BF2S, or any other organization willing to accept it.
That's how you keep it alive; when the big corps don't want it, give it to the community.

i think they will have rankd servers for a long time so no need to worry, all that would happen was there wouldnt be as many servers that were ranked
