I only work a 37.5 hour week. And I have flexi-time and 25 annual leave days a year (not including company holidays and national holidays!)... Duffman says 'Ohhh yeahhh!'.

Many European nations have shorter work weeks, because it allows more people to be employed, but I think these kinds of policies are a bit outdated. Moving towards a 40 hour week is probably for the best.
Damn... I get 5 days vacation and 10 holidays. I only work 40 hours a week though.CameronPoe wrote:

He was elected fairly and should be given his 100 days at least.
Its funny to see who starts calling him a Nazi and a Hitler.
That’s the progressive thinking, tolerance and encouragement of discourse they preach. We always knew they were liars, now you all know. What you do with this information is up to you.
While it is true that many people who call themselves progressive are just as close-minded as many conservatives, there are plenty of openminded people among both liberals and conservatives.Hunter/Jumper wrote:

I'm getting sick of this French stereotype. What the hell? What the hell is wrong with France? Not one bit more than the USA. This "standing joke" is getting very old very fast. Not wrote:

As someone else here has said, Americans typically parrot the British in their ridicule of France without really knowing the history behind the tension.konfusion wrote:

France tried to get a higher standard of living by setting the work to 35 hours a week. Socially this is excellent, as it gives everyone a chance to be with their family etc. It gives people time to take care of their kids, it motivates workers to work better.
But it also decreases the overall profit of France by reducing their total productivity. That is what Sarkozy wants to improve.
I like his thinking This is a good way to have people rewarded who put more effort into their work.

Ireland has a 4.3% unemployment rate and our working week is circa 40 hours or slightly under. France are just inept and stuck in their ways.Kmarion wrote:
Did any other European states follow France's lead with the 35 hour work week? I understood it was an idea that was meant to reduce unemployment. But doesn't that also just force lower wages since employers would have to hire more employees to cover the gaps in service/production? Lower wages/lower spending/lower economic growth/ higher unemployment..etc..etc. France's unemployment rate hasn't fallen below 8 percent in a quarter century. Those numbers would scare the hell out of Americans who now see rates at 4.6 .When faced with no job or working 40+ hours a week I'll take the latter. Hard work builds character anyways .

That's awesome, even the UK is hovering at a decent rate 5.5 ish? But Those countries are not forcing a 35 hour work week are they? There are some industries that must go outside those restrictions. It doesn't mean as a whole nation the standard should be 40+ hours though. I'm for just allowing more room for the sick ambitious people who enjoy working themselves night and day.CameronPoe wrote:

Our legal maximum average working week is 48 hours (not including breaks, etc.). It's illegal not to get 11 consecutive hours off work in every 24 hour period.Kmarion wrote:

I'd say thats quite a big difference from 35. When I drove for UPS we had restrictions with the amount of hours we were allowed to be out on the road (Obviously for safety reasons). They recently changed it before I left and I believed the law was that you had to have 10 hours off between shifts. Anything over 8 hours was overtime and the pay was around 45 usd an hour. So most drivers were pushing the restrictions everyday to bring in good money. This meant all the guys who wanted to give their hours up and go home to have a life outside of work could do so easily. Amazing how everyone won with no government interference.CameronPoe wrote:

Varies by employer. If we worked on national holidays at UPS it was triple time.Harmor wrote:
In the United States you get paid 1x your rate for the first 8 hours, 1.5x your rate for the next 4 hours, and 2x your rate beyond that.
On federal holidays you get paid 2x your rate I believe (it may be 1.5x, I don't know for certain).
Now if they could only get that 'no-doze' pill that allows me to sleep 2 hours a-day...I may actually be able to buy a house.
And by state.Kmarion wrote:

at UPS you earned your money. I felt bad for you guys.Kmarion wrote:
