Hey guys,

Well im generally interested in planning a new build. Nothing set in stone, like im gona buy tomorrow, just some general ideas... may build it in the summer? Anyways what do you think?

REMEMEBR: This is my FIRST build, i have only chosen these on what i *think* looks ok, using my (limited) knowledge of self builds.

https://img515.imageshack.us/img515/6902/firstbuildcn1.jpg

Also, was thinking of a CoolerMaster Stacker 830 Evo case.

http://www.coolermaster-europe.com/inde … 0Evolution

Anything im missing? Anything terrible? Anything could be improved? Please take an extra look at PSU, RAM and cooling, cos thats where i have no idea what im doing.

Budget is around £1500 total.

Thanks for any help.

MAKE SURE your RAM is right, its easy to get wrong, I made that costly mistake.

What's gonna be your DVD-ROM, KEyboard, mouse, floppy drive, or monitor?  or do you have those already?

Didnt think of DVD, will look now - thanks. Do i need a floppy these days?

Allready have G5 and G15, monitor is allready included (look, samsung one).

Thanks

PC6400 is ddr2 800mhz, most mobos support up to 1200mhz.

That's a pretty expensive build =/ lawl @ UK prices

For a cooler get a Tuniq Tower 120.

Looks good other than the Arctic Cooling fans. The case fans are "okay", but there are better ones. The CPU cooler is pretty crappy, though. You're better off going with a Zalman CNPS9500 or one of the Scythe or Thermaltake ones.

I also recommend getting two 74GB Raptors instead of the one 150GB Raptor. It will be 148GB of space, but you can put them in a RAID array and make it twice as fast.

Yes, I have used the floppy recently.  My motherboard is from 2005, so things may have changed, but I need a floppy drive to update BIOS.  Plus, floppy drives are dirt cheap.  Might as well, IMO.

UK = Rip off nation.

We usually have a 1£ = 1$ conversion

That cooler looks beasty... im looking for something good to OC the 6600 - will the Tuniq do the trick?

Changed the HSF, can you reccomend any better case fans?

I looked into the 2 x 74GB RAID 0, but id be paying £50 more, for the same space, and a small speed increase. Plus the Raptor X is pretty, and the CM 830 case has a special design / holder to show it off - apparently!

if you are gonna buy get this system then scrap the 8800 and get the newest dx10 from ATI. i don't know that much about all this but i hear and saw some benchmarks showing that it's better.

I heard a 2900XT is only comparable with an 8800GTS (can't compete with 8800GTX) , and requires a 750W PSU.

I think you have to pay extra if you want to have the raptor  to have the clear window... Coz my raptor isn't a clear one.

Your PSU is fine, I got a 8800GTX and E6700 and I'm only on a 600 watt lol.

To motherdear: ATI drivers = teh fail. 8800 series > R600 actually.

Yes get the Tuniq Tower 120, best air cooler money can buy.

I think a 700 or 750 watt PSU will be fine.

It's not a "small speed increase", it's just about twice as fast as a single Raptor. Your choice though.

Which CPU HSF did you change to? I see the same thing.

As for case fans, look into the Silverstone ones. They got a 120mm fan that pushes out 110CFM at only 39dba. Those are a tad pricey though. For case fans it doesn't really matter too much, as long as there is a good amount of airflow and as long as the noise isn't a problem. If you want long lasting fans, get ball bearing ones.

No need for a floppy. You can use a thumb drive as a floppy if you need it.

EDIT: If you want a bigger PSU check out the Thermaltake Toughpower 750w.

Can USBs be used in windows setup. Eg insert SATA driver is usally done via floppy, will it recognise a USB during install?

My PSU should be k right? Quality over quantity?

£130.00... hmmmm tis a lot...

Might just go for the GTS, then SLI it later.

Pretty nice. That GTS'll go good for you. You'll want to up the PSU if you go SLI (which you should).

I wouldn't recommending raiding tbh, 150 GB raptor is fine by itself.

Switch the RAM to Crucial Ballistix. OCZ is nice, but those sticks don't use D9GMH, whereas the Crucial does.

Any reccomendations? I dont know what is a decent manufacturer... i do know that a decent quality lower watt PSU, is better than a poor quality higher watt PSU...

What is D9GHM? I chose the OCZ becuase of the SLI features, as i thought with an Nvidia GPU, and NForce motherboard it would fly...?

Or you could try OCZ, I heard they're pretty good.
