I live in Seattle, WA (U.S) And I've lived in a few cities in NY and Montana. I go all over the place, I'm rarely ever home, I go downtown, the beach, hiking, the rural areas. I meet loads of people, but the ONLY place I've ever encountered racism, was in school. I'm still in school (kinda..) A senior in a few months, and I've noticed a few things...
99% of the black kids hang out with only other black kids.
ALL the hispanic kids (yes all) hang out with only other hispanic kids
a little over half the asian kids only hang out with asian kids
and the majority of the white kids only hang-out with other white kids in their assorted cliques.
There are exceptions of course.
I've never figured out why exactly all that is, I mean I can assume that maybe it's that whole 'acceptance' thing, but being around people of your own color just to gain eaiser acceptance seems outlandish and silly to me.
Also, I hear ALOT white kids make fun of black kids for 'acting gangsta' and 'coming from broken homes'. We have a ridiculous amount of fights at my current highschool, and it's always the 'white-gangsta' kids VS the "black gangsta kids". We've had several incidents where people have been injured because of knives and screw drivers.
What the hell is going on? Are most schools racialy divided? Or do I just happen to end up at handfulls of schools filled with ignorant kids?
I would very much like your opinion on this matter because this has been bothering me for close to three years.
Also, is it just ignorance that provokes racism? Has anyone who has been a victim of racism, been a victim of a racist who was intelligent, and apart from their racism an otherwise decent person? Atleast from my expierence the people who diligently admit their 'hatred' of another color seem to lack luster when it comes to anything involving common sense or logic.
