Its a sociology thing. I don't know the specific terms and all but that 91-year old man had a better chance of being saved if it was just one witness. In a large group of watchers, his chances of being saved dwindles, as a likelyhood for a single individual to break from the group of watchers to help the person becomes less as more people are added to the "watcher" group. However, if one person does decide to jump in and save the guy, his chances are highten, and more likely cause a chain reaction of more people from the group of watchers to jump in and help.
The reverse effect is true. For example, if you saw a bridge that looks shady and would break if you cross it, if you were a lone, you're more likely not use the bridge. However, if a group of people decide to cross the bridge, you're more likely to disreguard your better judgement and cross the bridge with the group of people.
Bah, the bridge might not been the best of examples. In addition, there's a lot of variables to account for to determine what type of people are more likely to break from the "pack" mentality.GunSlinger OIF II wrote:

FUcking Hell! Throw that old guy in fucking UFC!
He takes punches like a champ!
Seriously though, what a fucked up world we live in.

Wrong. It's a sociological thing that people tend not to think to step in. Fun fact: if you ever do need help with something don't yell for help, yell at specific people. That way they're much more likely to react.mKmalfunction wrote:

FYI Update: WXYZ.com has obtained the mugshot of the man police say savagely beat and carjacked a 91-year-old World War II veteran. The attack was captured by a security camera, shocking video first aired yesterday on WXYZ.
Police arrested 22-year-old Deontae Edward Bradley in Warren last night, just hours after the video first aired.

Yea. It is pretty comforting to know that I can legally defend myself, family/friends/innocents from some fucktard who holds no value to human life. I stood in the Senate Chamber in Tallahassee when Senator Peaden put that bill (no retreat anymore) through. The dems bitched during debate "it'll be the wild west" argument, but in the end -the Republicans put it though and Jeb Bush signed it. I now mainly carry a Kimber Ultra Carry II with night sights and a laser grip. If I'm going to the beach or another place where I'm in light clothing -I carry my .357 mag model 60 S&W. When I feel the need for a change, I'll break out the H&K USP .40 compact. In my car I have a thunder five .410/45 long. All of my pistols go in Galco holsters (save the thunder five). I've all ready used a remmington marine magnum 12 gauge 870 shotgun to prevent property damage & bodily harm. Those frisky idiotic frat boys...usmarine2005 wrote:

The reason why people-especially Americans (except u.s. armed forces) are such pussies are because They have absolutely no discipline education. Everything in America is so girly and stupid and weak now. It nothing but party, party and party. I hate those assholes. They don't deserve to live. I am not saying all of them are gay, just the ones who think they are so cool. Also, we used to be able to play fight with each other at schools, which made us tough. Now, you lightly punch one other- suspension!!!! Oh, and you punch them once, they go on the floor crying. I get punched multiple times and guess what? I don't even whine about it. If they punch like if they are attacking me, I just beat them. Plain and simple.

Hey buddy. Americans aren't pussies -come on down to the Swamps of Florida and say that to me, or go tell that to the corn fed boys of the mid east Nebraska areas -yell out your theory in downtown Detroit. Also, WTF does partying have to do with it? I work hard, I play hard. I bet I could drink you under the table and then beat you with the legs from it. Suspension? What? High school anyone? A 15-18 yr old hit you? It didn't hurt? What a surprise. Get out there and see the rest of the Country or better yet, world.thtthht wrote:

Whoo Hoo!!!! And yes, I have intervened in similar incident, except it was 3 on 1 with a baseball bat. I couldn't sit there and do nothing...literally. Something inside me made me jump out of the car before my brother even stopped fully. It didn't matter WHAT the kid taking the beating had done...3 on 1 with a bat just didn't have any reason I could fathom.DBBrinson1 wrote:

theres a world of difference between a stranger and your wife and kids. one of the other parts is don't risk your life foolishly confronting possible armed robbers so you can return to your wife and kids.rdx-fx wrote:
If you're not willing to risk your life for another person, you should seriously think twice about having a wife or kids. That's part of the job description of being a father/husband/man.
Are you telling me that a person who would have helped the victim and would have beaten the criminal, would face charges and/or a lawsuit from the criminal? Is this normal in the US?usmarine2005 wrote:
I would have jumped in. But you are correct about a lawsuit, which is why I do not own a gun, because I would have shot his ass.Vilham wrote:

as to the OP, they probably didnt want to be sued by the robber or they were pussy's.
Here the bystanders would be prosecuted for not helping a person in need.
would I have intervened ? difficult to say, sitting here in my comfy armchair...
if the same situation hat ocured in Germany, maybe, because ordinary criminals here are a lot less likely to carry weapons. In America, however, I wouldn't be so sure. If I was unarmed myself, I'd probably be hesitant to do anything. The risk you run just can't be calculated. Nothing is gained if he has a gun and you get killed.
Sure, people will call you a hero, and it will be all over the news, but your kids will still grow up without their father.
In the end, I don't think you can really blame ordinary citizens for not intervening. Some people just can't handle violence very well, they feel uncomfortable seeing it, and don't know what to do. I know I am one of those people. I'd rather call the police and administer first aid if necessary, but I'd leave the fighting to those who are trained professionals or feel comfortable smashing other people's faces in. Some people just are not cut out for fights, I guess.
I believe in Germany the law is that you have to help those in need, but only to the extent that you do not endanger you own life in the process. Calling authorities, however, is the minimal requirement in those situations ( police, fire dpt., ambulance ).
Again, difficult to say sitting in front of my PC. I'd have to live through that situation and feel what those people felt to tell you exactly what I'd have done.

"people in ny have a general idea of how to drive. one of the pedals goes forward the other one prevents you from dying"
Someone could have went over and check to see how bad he was afterwards, and if there was something they or someone else could do for him until the police arrive.B.Schuss wrote:

I only see one video, which ends when the guy gets in the car.
Also, having watched that, I think the guy was beating him because he wasn't letting go of the door. Not that that excuses it, but at least he wasn't just beating him up for fun.

And yelling "FIRE" is more effective than yelling "POLICE" or "HELP" - even if it's the police/help you need.Bubbalo wrote:
