Objectives
1    To review the Binary system.
2    To state some attributes or factors affecting the overall performance of a CPU.
3    To identify different families of CPU and motherboards.

E-Learning Activity 1
Down load the file: COS 2007 Week 05 ELearning Binary Review from Assignment 1 in MEL->Week5 ->Learning Material Assignment 1and submit through the view and complete link after you have completed the review assignment. (softcopy)

E-Learning Activity 2

This warming up activity will focus on the Performance and Maintenance
1.    Under the Control Panel, double-click at the Folders button
2.    Select to view Category view from left pane

3.    Select Performance and Maintenance
4.    Select See basic information about computer

5.    Record the processor model and the RAM size through MEL-> learning material ->week 5. using the View and Complete link for e-learning assignment 1.

E-Learning Activity 3:  Motherboard and processor E-Learning
Visit http://www.computer.howstuffworks.com/motherboard.htm .
From this site, explore with the help of the power point slide given in MEL-> learning material->week 5:
1.    Answer the power point questions at each exploring phases.
2.    Make a comparison table for the different motherboard attributes, processor types, RAM types, RAM sizes, number of RAM slots, number of PCI slots and others.
3.    From the comparison table, make a simple comment or inference on what your exploration phases have helped you to learn motherboard, processor and its computer system architecture better.
4.    Submit the above through MEL->Learning Material->Week 5->Assignment 3->View and complete link.

E-Learning Activity 4:  Processor E-Learning
Visit Intel at www.intel.com, www.amd.com, and Apple at www.apple.com to find their fastest processor. Explore to help you understand processor better
http://www.intel.com/products/processor … /index.htm  or http://www.geek.com/procspec/procspec.htm

1.    Tabulate the finding and make a simple comment or inference on the finding.
2.    Can Apple run on Window operating system and what are their implications? Find supporting document in the web.

A resources for detailed information on a large variety of processors and other computer hardware is http://www.tomhardware.com/cpu.htm and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Showimage.aspmotherboard view or http://www.geek.com/procspec/procspec.htm.

3.    A 2.4GHz Celeron processor will almost always be slower than a 2.4GHz Pentium 4 because of their design. Do you agree? Do some research to determine if the increase in processing speed is worth the extra money?

4.    Submit all the three answers to MEL->Learning Material->Week 5-> Assignment 4-View and complete link.

lol.
but the thing i need explanation is the celeron and the pentium 4 processor, anyone care to explain?

The Celeron has less cache (128KB, which is very low - extra cache often doesn't help that much, but 128KB is very little). Pretty similar designs apart from that I think.

really depends on what architecture the celeron is based on. If it's on a netburst design (probably is, since I think all other celerons never reached 2.4GHz. Are there even core based celerons out yet?), it will be very similar to a P4, only the slower FSB and the little cache will decrease performance. Also it might be missing some of the enhancements (like the ability to process x64) that were introduced over time to the P4 line

wait a moment: the celeron D's are based off the P4s. What were the old ones based off? How old are those questions? 2003?

EDIT2: wiki'ed a bit and apparentely the non "D" celerons that have stock speeds up to 2.4GHz are based off the northwood core. Now in some cases I remember a Northwood P-4 to be faster clock for clock in comparison to a Prescott P-4s. (prescott had a major redesign in the microarchitecture) So i figure that under some freak conditions that a celeron based off a northwood could actually be faster than a prescott at same speeds. Damn your questions are badly formulated

EDIT3: are there even prescotts @ 2.4 GHz? Or only northwoods? willamettes only went to 2.0 if i remember correctly

once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

I would be the teacher if I had your class...

Celerons are slower is mainly because of the cache, and because it is designed to be a low budget CPU. Lower cache = Slower. It is worth more the money to buy a P4... I saw a Super PI benchmark where a celly ran at 4ghz and got 40 secs... My P4 @ 3.0ghz had 40secs...

You can typically raise the FSB on Celerons pretty high due to the low heat output, though.

thats exactly my point. If you OC a P III based celeron to 2.4 GHz (1 GHz OC from the fastest tutalin based one, 1.3GHz form the fastest coppermine one), it would beat any netburst based CPU.

then again if you take a benchmark with such a small footprint that it fits into the celly cache, there wouldn't be a large difference

my old celeron ran at 2.8GhZ stock , I think it was northwood or prescott

Don't you get it, its the salespersons motto "sell-and-run" (sell it and get the hell out of there before the customer comes back)

My point beeing: We agree dude

Sell-and-run sounds more like celeron than shit-er-ron
