The reason that it is generally assumed that any aliens we encounter will be more advanced than us is that, for how old the rest of the universe is, Earth is extremely young.  The chances of us finding another planet close to the earth in age is very slim.
This really depends on what this alien life is like. For some life form that works on something near the same systems as us, ie carbon based, requiring metals etc. there is a requirements for a planet orbiting a second generation star, a star that has formed out of the remnants of another star. Only in this circumstance will there be enough of the heavier elements to form life as we know it. We are therefore pretty much at the earliest possible time in which life could have evolved, indicating we will be the most advanced. If we compare how long the universe has been around to how long we expect it to hang around for, we really are right at the beginning.
What?? Living organisms have been living on earth for about 3900 million years, and humans have been around for only about 1 million year. Don't you think there could be a Chance that some intelligent aliens have been living on their planet millions of years earlier than us?? I am pretty certain their is several civilizations out there that are thousands of times smarter and more advanced than us. We are in war with etch other and have millions of people starving. If we are the most intelligent in all of the universe it's crazy.
I agree with you we are pretty f*cked up...

Instead of solving problems like global warming and hunger, bush is more interested in wars with "terrorism" and  communism....

But the middle east really is f*cked up too, why the f**k do they have to run around blowing themselves and others up all the time??

And concerning the nuklear projects in Iran, there should be NOTHING radioactive in the middle east.. it can only end with either a new chernobyl or the first terrorist nuclear bomb...........

The whole world is just f*cked !     screw it, i'm moving to Mars!

Deserteagle, I meant the theory of aliens being ahead of our time would be destroyed, not the aliens themselves.

Scorpion, supposedly aliens are depicted as being way ahead of us in terms of technology.
All sci-fi movies about aliens show them living with flying cars, UFOs, and massive buildings.

What I mean is that we may land on a far-out planet and find out these aliens are not what we thought they would be, and they are actually behind us in technology terms (ie. invented the computer only 2 years ago, still have black and white TVs, etc.)
That's just TV and films. No scientist seriously believes that any alien lifeforms have to be more advanced than we are.
The majority of the public does.
@Dezerteagal5 - if you brought technology from 500 years ago to a religious culture, or some other culture that won't explain things through reason right away (ie superstitious), you might have problems with giving them technology - ie, them wanting to kill you because it's "cursed" or "the tool of the devil".
I like the OP's perspective on this. The aliens are usually depicted as destroyers technologically ahead of us. Is that what we expect ourselves to do? What would the public reaction be to primitive aliens?

I think that we would not land on there planet in the first place.  Think about it, would it be wise to bring a flying spaceship into a civilization that has not even discovered how fly yet?  If this time comes when we do take space exploration to a new level then we need to change the way we are now.

We fight our own kind for resources when we could be working together and forging a stronger planet.  Once we can live together as brothers and not kill each other, then and only then i would think that our civilization is ready to explore with ships beyond our Star System.

In my opinion our kind is just entering the adult years, its time for us to change.

"Obviously it would be destroyed", surely that depends on if there's oil there or not ;p
"would NASA or other private space companies even want to continue space exploration?" Perhaps, just perhaps, the most retarded comment I've heard in a long time. You reckon that once we find some group, that's the "exploration" done? Imagine the conversations...

The fact that life on Earth came so quickly after the formation of the universe is fairly surprising. There really isn't alot of scope for a similar carbon based life form to have evolved much earlier than us.
There are millions of stars like ours, there is plenty of scope for other carbon-based life forms. We might be at an early time for the universe, but for life thats a long long long time.

No it's really not that long a time, it just seems like a long time to us. Once you account for all the time in which there is absolutely no possibility for carbon based life to exist, there really isn't much time left for life to start and evolve so far.

If you are of a scientific nature, try reading The Anthropic Cosmological Principle It goes through it all very well, but does require a decent scientific background to follow it. (there's equations a plenty)

I suspect that life is very common in the Universe.  Anywhere there is liquid water there will be life.  The problem is that most life in the Universe will probably be microbial.

The chances for intelligent life in the universe, that we will every have contact with, is so remote its discouraging, not impossible - just improbable.

I strongly doubt we would if they were intelligent life.
