I have a problem here. My broadband ( from sky, ADSL, BT cable ) is screwed up. I have a wireless router and my broadband is 8mb/s. No more, no less.
Now, the problem is the following : I have a latop downstairs with a netgear wireless card in it; it connects to the internet perfectly and gets a speed of 7mb/s. Now, I do not use that laptop ( first of all because it is about 7 years old, second because it fails ) and I use my Mesh computer upstairs. Just recently I got a new PCI wireless card. The Netgear WPN311 Range Max wireless PCI card. I installed it perfectly and went on with my work.
Problem.
My internet connection is 512kb/s. 512 FUCKING KILOBYTES.

Now, seeing as I have tried EVERYTHING, I am guessing it is the card...but why? Why the card? It should be working fine as it is the most powerful PCI card available from netgear and my wireless router is from netgear.

Windows firewall - off.
All internet hoggers - off.
Speed? 512kb/s sometimes reaching 700kb/s.

It can't be the router or sky blocking it, because then it would have blocked my laptop as well.
I need help. I have another wireless adpater, but for that same reason did I change to a better adapter.

This makes Zimmer sad, very sad.

Never used wireless so I know very little I'm afraid.  You don't have any electrical devices upstairs interfering with it do you?

It could just need a firmware update. Have a look on Netgears site, type in your PCI model and see if there's anything to download. Thats what I had to do with my brothers card in his laptop and after that it worked fine.

You might have to do the same with the router.

Edit: It says on Netgears site that your card is optimized for use with WPN824 RangeMax Router, dont supose you have a different one?

I have a different one. But it SHOULDN'T be limiting my connection.

Looks like a problem on Sky's side (possible exchange faults), I had a similar issue with Plusnet when my connection dropped to 128kb (I was not amused) and after various line checks and messing around the problem magically resolved itself

But the computer downstairs has a connection of 7000mbps.

Oh, my answer to your question Bullet Tooth was not very clear. I do not have the range max router.

But it isnt that....I turn my PC on and off all the time, take out the PCI card, re-install the NEWEST driver software....nothing...nothing at all. I still get shitty speeds of 512kbps while a 7 year old laptop downstairs gets speeds of 7000mbps... something is wrong here.

I have screwed around with the settings, installed different drivers, tried my other wireless adapter...and nothing.
The really weird thing is, that before I had this PCI card, I had a Belkin Wireless USB Adapter. One of the shittest around and for the first 2 weeks of having Sky I got 7000mbps connections speed with it. Then I switched to the Netgear and everything went haywire. Now, even if I try to uninstall Netgear completely and then re-install Belkin...nothing. Still the same shit speed. Probably shitter.

I am going to take this up with Sky. But last time I asked them about it they said "Turn off your Windows Firewall" I was like "I don't have it turned on...." and then they said "Oh. Please hold." And they never got back to me.

Aw poor you with your 8mbps connection! Here I am thinking I had it bad with my 2mbps connection AT BEST!!

Sarcasm aside I wish you the best of luck. Telecommunication companies are evil, I bet the fault lies with them.
I myself have a vendetta against New Zealand's principal Telecommunications provider as you may have read in a very angry rant thread I made a while ago after I lost my mind trying to deal with Telecom.

I had 512 up until February, shoosh you (and I know how you feel )

So the router is connected at full speed (7mbps) yet you only get 512kbps at the computer (through speedtest or sommat)?

You don't have QoS or some piece of shit turned on do you?

QoS?
Will the speed of the internet change the further away my router is?
Because currently it is downstairs and I cannot put it upstairs ( the dicks up at Sky never put a cable from the line to go upstairs )
I tested the speed with the laptop and I sw that upstairs it got a speed of 300kbps and then when I put it beside the router it got a connection of 7000kbps.
I think that is the problem. I have another router, but should I switch skys router for the better one that I have? ( sky router is just a plain old netgear pile of crap ) would it make a difference what router is managing the internet?

I also have 16Mb sky broadband, and have had nothing but trouble from them.

Try phoning them, not because they will help you, but because they are so stupid it's almost funny. I have phoned them about 8 times and NONE of them knew what packet loss was, they hadn't even heard of it and couldn''t put me though to someone who did.

I had a wireless router before I changed to sky (3com) and it was a good one and wanted to keep it, but they wouldn't / didn't know how to give me the information to use my old router.

In the end I just got an phone extension cable going to the room my PC is in and plugged my router into my PC.

Now it works slightly better, but still crap. I constantly have to restart the router to get it to work.

So to anyone thinking of getting sky broadband... don't.

You do know you can just replcae the sky router with your router?
Their router is nothing special, it is just a rotuer with SKY emblemmed onto it.
I might try that. Only solution.

How fast is your line when you are at full speed dauntless?
I suppose Sky aren't too bad, they promised me an 8mbit connection and I have one, but only when I am right beside the router...

Edit - No you can't, they have a special port for the Sky connector instead of a basic ethernet cable. Fuck this, they are going to get a big chunk of my mind on the phone. Fucking wankers.

I know the router isn't anything special, but you have to set it up right.

I can get about 1.5 Mbps on newsgroups, but most places it's way below that sometimes it's like 10Kbps.

If it's a desktop PC why don't you wire it into the router? End of problems? I used to wirelessley connect to my router and it was tempremental at best.

I had the exact same problem Zimmer!

My Comp on the second and third floor got great connections (the one on the third floor was right above the one on the second, where the router is), but the comp in the first floor got no love. Solution: A repeater. It get's the signal from the router and Makes a a sort of a bridge and boosts the signal over to the Computer.

Router --> Repeater --> Comp

It works great, and the internet is good on all computers.

btw, I have a 6mbit connection.

Yes I have it, as I said before it sucks.

Don't get it.

I'm trying to get out of the 12 month contract with them at the moment.

The technical support is crap. All I want is my settings for my own router, which has more power and more range, I can't receive this piddly thing in some rooms of the house. Oh and the connection drops at random intervals. I can receive next doors bt router better than my own which is next to the Pc. Rubbish
^ Same as me...

To be honest it's my fault I'm in this mess as I didn't even think to check if there were any problems with it as soon as I saw it was 16Mb and uncapped.
