Last night I saw a programme called panorama, this episode was focusing on the 'religion' Scientology, did anyone else see it? Anyway having watched it, i couldn't work out if this was:

1. A big money making scheme
2. A bunch of crazy Yanks
3. The latest fashion for the movie stars
4. A genuine religion

Now I only saw the BBC's half on the story and I know that the media is not always truthful, but from what I did see it seemed as though this so called religion was nothing more than a cult. They stalked the reporter (what kind of religion does that?!) They made a short film making out the BBC to be evil and made up a bunch of crap to support it. It appeared as though whenever someone spoke out against the religion they would harrass them, for example one guy said that there was a 120 page PDF on his whole life on the scientology website just because he spoke out against the religion.

I mean seriosuly what kind of "church" has a church dedicated to celebrities? Let me explain, on this programme it showed one of the churches with big gold writing on it. The writing read something like "The Church of scientology for celebrities only" Something like that, but the point i'm trying to make is that no other religion would do that because religion is about belief not trying to make money.

Why have a scientology church dedicated to celebrites?! WTF!

I want to hear your views.

Edit: This Is the Link to the Programme if you did not watch it http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/programmes/panorama/default.stm

Yeah I saw that program.

I did find it VERY very strange that as soon as the Scientology people heard about the reporter, the suddenly started to stalk him and film everything that he was doing. Also I found it very similar to a documentary by Louis Theroux called "The most hated family in America"

This documentary was about a family who had very strong religious beliefs that they hated blacks, gays and others things. But they got very defensive when being asked questions, much like Scientology. As if they all have something to hide.

I also find it very strange that they got all worked up when the word 'Cult' is mentioned? When did the guy go mental when this was mentioned? That is not the sort of person who I would like as a religious leader.

I wish I had seen it. What the world needs is an absence or minimisation of religion, not a new wave of cultish neurosis-filled wishy-washy nonsense followed by brainwashed automatons.

It's just society's way of killing off the idiots via mass suicide. Think of it as modern natural selection. It's a money making scheme too though, but they'll eventually find a need to commit mass suicide. Once the guy at the top decides:

a) things are getting too hot
b) he has enough money

I disagree - see Chambers Dictionary for this:

Chambers Dictionary wrote:

Cult - Noun - 1a. a system of religious belief; b. the sect of people following such a system. 2a. an unorthodox or false religion; b. the people adhering to such a system. 3. an especially extravagant admiration for a person, idea, etc. 4. something which is popular and regarded as particularly significant by a certain group of people: a fashion, craze or fad. cultic or cultish adj. cultism noun. cultist noun.
Take particular note in:
"3. an especially extravagant admiration for a person, idea, etc. 4. something which is popular and regarded as particularly significant by a certain group of people: a fashion, craze or fad."

I believe it's in that context that the word 'cult' was being used.

And what do I think of Scientology?
I believe it's ridiculous, and to such an extent that the segregation they are causing can only lead to tensions.
And they claim the Nazis were pure evil...
Granted, they were fairly mad from most people's point of view - but if you see where I'm going with that...

However, I must admit that I am against organised religion from my own personal viewpoints - they can operate if they want, but if they ever try to force anything upon me, I fail to comprehend their purpose.
I have time for religion and why people wish to follow it - just no something so life-degrading.

And it was a great program - I encourage you all to watch it if you can!

All the best,

If a religion didn't make money it wouldn't exist.  So all religiions exist to make money to some extent.

Yep...

It is just a numbers game. Lower numbers = unorthodox = not the norm by, well, having numerical inferiority. It is a cult when a few people practice it and a cult becomes a religion when a lot of people practice it. If a cult lasts long enough, beyond being a passing fancy or fad, then it can become a religion.

A cult = a small cult, a small following, a potential passing fad or fancy.
Religion = a large cult, a larger following, a fad or fancy that simply did not pass (or has yet to pass into history).

Calling Scientology a real religion is like saying that "I cannot believe this is not butter" buttery spread is real butter.

All it is is a scam to steal money from people who they suck in just enough so that they can brainwash them, and get tax exemption for the higher-ups.

Now also remember that on the cruise ship Free Wind which Scientology uses as its headquarters is a journal of George Orwell (1984, Animal Farm) which contains an entry that said that Hubbard told him that the best way to make $1,000,000 was to start your own "religion".

I would not call your post flame bait... I mean all of the so-called world religions had to start out as a cult, they don't start out with a huge following, now did they? Nope...

Just finished watching the Panorama Scientology documentary online. Those guys are scary deluded fuckers. It's brainwashing, nothing short of it. It needs to be nipped in the bud before too many people get hurt.
