I'm looking into getting a sound card. My budget is around $300AU, but I am prepared to spend more if it really makes a big difference. I would mainly use it for gaming, but I do listned to a bit of music and watch the odd movie.
The soundblaster X-fi platinum and the XtremeGamer Fatal1ty pro both seem to be good sound cards. I'm also looking at the Razer barracuda, but I haven't found anything to say how good it is. Could I get some comments on these cards, any better cards, or even if it is worth getting a $300 sound card over just onboard?
Also, what headphones would be good for a sound card? Will the sound quality be good on any pair, or would I have to fork out more for a decent set?

Karma for good info.

buy this: XtremeGamer Fatal1ty professional series! without the internal bay cos it has some unfixable hardware issues. u wont be sorry if u buy this, trust me. And there is also a good beta support for vista.

Well, there's not much of a difference between the X-Fi Platinum (which obviously brings the most gimmicks), the X-Fi Music (which is good quality for price) and the XtremeGamer Fatal1ty (which is overpriced shit). Since you have $300AU to spend you'd rather go for the X-Fi Music and the top end Sennheiser gaming headset than with a more expensive sound card and a cheap(er) headset.
