I've finally started looking into fulfilling a dream of mine; I've started looking into arranging a holiday to the mystical Easter Island, 2,237 miles off the coast of Chile. I've discovered that it's not as hard to get to as I thought, it has the longest airstrip in Chile (built by NASA as an emergency stop for the space shuttle) and 4 flights a week leave from Santiago airport. The island has one town and two hotels and even a museum; I was just wondering has anyone on the forum been there and can they give me any advice or feedback?

Dont think any of us here has even been, maybe because its the most remote island on earth.

Some people actually travel you know... And with 4 planes a week I wouldn't say it's that remote.
I'd love to go, but it's pretty pricey.

He hasn't been either, I noticed one other person mentioned it in the thread on top 5 destinations still to be visited but I don't think he'd been either. I reckon I'll make it next summer (off peak season, which I think is August - September) and I might try and get Machu Picchu in there too. I think you can get it all in under €5000 if you can get the right flights.

Nah, Havent been, wanna go.... how pricey is pricey? And besides observe all the stuff how much is there to do? I know the statues and carvings take people there, but what would keep you there?

There are a few volcanoes there and a museum, I think the four day excursion package that is available is more than enough. You can rent horses or bikes to see the whole island apparently.

No, it's to close to Mexico.

Apart from the Statues it looks pretty boring. I'd want to visit it for a day but that's it. Next stop after that would be Hawaii.

according to that globe it looks farther from Mexico then the USA, and maybe the same distance as Canada. Plus Mexicans dont sneak across the border like they do into texas.

I watched a documentary about Easter Island (also known as Rapa Nui), and how its former natives waged civil war over the islands natural resources.  It was a fantastic watch, if I can find a link ill post it.

I too would love to go there someday.

Edit:  Its not the documentary I was taking about, but still interesting none the less.
