...I've never done it.

But I'm thinking about going to a range to try it out.  Nothing big...no rifles or anything, just your basic handgun.  After years of playing CS, DoD, BF2...among other FPS games, I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to give it a shot (heh, a delicious pun).

Anyway...this is going to make me come off sounding like an idiot.  But...wtf do I do?  Do I just go to a range and tell them I've never fired a gun before but that I want to try it?  I'm hoping I don't need to buy one first.  And, what kind of costs am I looking at here?  Is this something I can do when I have an hour or so of free time?  Or should I make sure I have more time available...?

Throw me a bone here, people.

go to a local gun range and see if they rent guns, you will have to buy their ammo, and pay there range fee.  make sure to get some instruction on weapons handling.  p.s.  HAVE FUN!!!

Thomas, I have some friends in CHI who frequent many ranges.  I know you can rent the gun and buy the ammo and just go at it, under supervision, of course.  If you want the info, let me know, I'll call the guys...

About how much would it cost to rent a gun and buy ammo?  Not that it matters, but I don't want to walk in there with like $20 and have it cost $50.  I also don't want to walk in there with $100 and have it cost $20.

...instruction on weapons handling?  Pfft, I'll just assume I know what I'm doing.

im not sure on the rental price maybe between 20 and 30 bucks, ammo price depends on cal. any where from 10 to 30 bucks a box, + range fees  maybe 7 to 10 for 30 min.  and if you have never shot before, get some instruction, please

Haha, I was joking about the instruction part.  Believe me, I would tell them I have no idea what I'm doing.

Thanks for the prices though...I guess bringing $100 or so wouldn't be a bad idea.

Just let them know how you are not an expert, they will walk you through it.  Whatever you do, when looking at the gun, DO NOT point it at anyone, haha.  I have a friend who learned the hard way that gun toting badasses really have a problem with having even an unloaded one pointed at them, even if you are just admiring the weapon.

I'd say bring 50 and you should be safe.  If you make it seem like you want to buy after you find a gun you like, they might even wave a bunch of the fees...

once you start, youre hooked.  last time me and a friend went to the range, we dropped about $160 in range fees and ammo, but we had (2) .40 cals, a .357 mag and a .45 acp.

I can understand why they might not like that.

Funny thing is, I'm not entirely against buying one...I'd just keep it in the house so I'd at least feel safer.  I live in a pretty good part of town and nothing bad ever really happens here, but you never know, and it'd do wonders for my peace of mind.

I went to one (not that it matters as Im in Australia). Never fired a gun before and it awas hellah fun. I went with my dad, and he chose the .44 Revolver that Clint Eastwood uses in Dirty Harry to fire, and I chose a Glock 19 (later used at Virginia tech :S)

The 19 was easy to fire - no external safety or anything... just pop the magazine in, pull the slide and away you go. And the Magnum had a ridiculous kick.

Overall it was great fun... and thats coming from someone whos vehemently FOR gun control

...remind me to stay on your good side.

But I know what you mean.  My best friend was mugged at knifepoint.  Scary thing is, I've walked down the street where he got mugged hundreds of times.

Well if you ever go to Vegas you can go to a range and rent full auto. Last time I was their, I saw a add to rent a M249 for $25 and ammo $35 for 100rnd belt. Rock and Roll!!

But on a serious note, get basic handling classes, I was a 8531(Range Coach) in the Marines and you wouldn't believe how many nimrods we had shooting on the pistol range. Full bird Col. that would be berm snipers!!

Hahaha, let's take it one step at a time though...if I've never fired a handgun, I'm not about to go out and buy a shotgun.

Besides, I just want to scare off intruders, not vaporize them...and the wall behind them.

Yeah, a gun is definitely one of those things where you realize how important it is when you need one and don't have one.  Shit in FL, you can get a concealed permit, and then shoot anyone that even THREATENS your safety.  Southern gun laws FTW...unless my future kids are trick or treating and scare someone....

well hell, its about 0300, and i need to get to bed.  if you go shooting remember this, these are the most important things to know:
1) get a gun that fits your hand, comfortably
2) make sure you can handle the recoil, but don't be afraid of it, everything kicks
3) you get what you pay for, if you buy a gun, buy from a trusted gun maker.

if you have any other questions, don't be afraid to message me, i've been shooting since i was 7, i am now 33 if i cant answer your question, my dad can, he is a gunsmith

What is really fun are the ranges that let you pack your own ammo then fire it.  I've been to a few shotgun ranges that do it.  A lot cheaper too.
