As long as there are no holes in unintended targets - you're good for a first timer.

Focus on the basics;
1) Don't point the gun at anything you're not willing to put holes into.
2) Don't drop the gun
3) Don't get all 'Rambo power rush' just because you have a 20oz piece of metal in your hand
4) Relax, listen to the trainer(s)
5) Have fun

I've taught more than a few people how to shoot pistols.
Only one was a natural at it.

Sounds pretty easy.

Also, I forgot to mention, I'm REALLY fucking good at Duck Hunt for Nintendo.

Seriously though, for the most part it just seems pretty basic.  Kind of like paintballing/lasertag...only a bit deadlier.

Hahaha, let's take it one step at a time though...if I've never fired a handgun, I'm not about to go out and buy a shotgun.

Besides, I just want to scare off intruders, not vaporize them...and the wall behind them.
First gun I ever fired was a .223 calibre rifle. Since then I've fired a few, .222 .223 .303 etc etc

Though I've never fired a pistol. Haha..

Guessing I'm not old enough either ( 14 years old lol)

1. Find a range that rents guns. Some do but not all call to ask. If they rent guns they sell ammo.

2. Go pick your hand gun, and rent it. Ask how to operate it, they will be glad tell you.

3. Follow all range rules, they are usually told to you if you say it's your first time there.
Good example.
http://www.scottsdalegunclub.com/RangeR … erSize.pdf

4. Strap up your target and wait until its safe to fire (you will be told). Unless it’s an indoor rang which usually have a target system which pulls back and forth so you can change your target and fire whenever.

5. As sed before relax it's not going to break your wrist or throw you back.

6. Line up the sights and fire.

Good luck.

Edit: as for cost, Hand gun rentals can be from 15-55$ and pistol ammo usually comes in boxes of 50 rounds for 5-15 $

Yeah, a gun is definitely one of those things where you realize how important it is when you need one and don't have one.  Shit in FL, you can get a concealed permit, and then shoot anyone that even THREATENS your safety.  Southern gun laws FTW...unless my future kids are trick or treating and scare someone....

for your first gun, I would try a nice, small .22 rifle.  Handguns can be a bit trickier to fire, as they recoil back and up, whereas a rifle just recoils back.  It's not very powerful at all, not loud enough to have to wear ear protection, and not enough kick to make your shoulder sore.  I would try a rifle before a handgun, just to get used to what it is like

Back when I was in cadets as a young'un I fired the dubbed down version of the British SA80 several times.  Nothing special to be honest, it didn't really turn me on like it does some people.
Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.

But I'm thinking about going to a range to try it out.  Nothing big...no rifles or anything, just your basic handgun.  After years of playing CS, DoD, BF2...among other FPS games, I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to give it a shot (heh, a delicious pun).

Anyway...this is going to make me come off sounding like an idiot.  But...wtf do I do?  Do I just go to a range and tell them I've never fired a gun before but that I want to try it?  I'm hoping I don't need to buy one first.  And, what kind of costs am I looking at here?  Is this something I can do when I have an hour or so of free time?  Or should I make sure I have more time available...?

Throw me a bone here, people.
Rifles are easier to start with than a pistol.  Pistols are much, much more dangerous and complicated than a simple rifles as well.  I recommend starting with a split stock single shot shotgun and then moving up to bolt action, then semi-auto rifles before moving on to revolver pistols and then in the end, semi auto pistols.

The chances of fucking up with a pistol are to great, especially with someone in-experienced at the trigger.

I've seen a couple of real rifles in a hunting museum, that's all.

When I'm old enough, I'll get a hunter's license and get a rifle and a shotgun and go shoot ptarmigan, geese and even deer.

My cousin hunts a lot, he got a couple of rifles and a shotgun, he even got a pistol (which is about as hard to get on Iceland as getting a heavy machinegun in the US lol)

ok, TMO, stepping up to the plate.

alot of things have been covered in this thread and i saw talk about concealed carry licenses.

lets start...can i get a beat?
errr, nevermind that.

ok, first thing first, find a nice INDOOR range. if you decide you like this and want to pursue it as a hobby you will want to do it year round, even in that snow.

second, you will want to shoot a handgun. any broke dick with one good eye and one good arm can fire a rifle accurately.....at least at the distances you will encounter. it takes skill to fire a handgun correctly....more skill than is required of short range rifle shots.

third, make sure the first one is a .22. doesnt matter if its a revolver or auto...you just need something to feel. once you get that down, move on to the old 9mm and proceed from there if you want (my personal fav is the .45 for obvious reasons.)
https://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f180/parkercustoms/uzi021.jpg

now, we get to technique....make sure the instructor knows you need assistance. tell him that you would like to try the "weaver stance". hell know what you mean and get you started.

*DO NOT ANTICIPATE RECOIL-it is there to let you know that the bullet has left the firearm.
*SIGHT ALIGNMENT, TRIGGER SQUEEZE-dont slap the trigger, a 1/16 inch difference at the end of the barrel equals a half foot difference at the target.
*DO NOT LET ADRENALINE GET THE BEST OF YOU-you are TMO, which is close to rambo, but not there so dont act like him
*BE SAFE-be sure every time you pull that trigger.

and have fun man.

oh, and if you ever want to shoot the fun stuff make your way south a little bit.

You forgot the most important and most overlooked technique:

Only use the very tip of your finger to pull the trigger.  Don't shove your whole finger into the trigger guard and pull the trigger with your knuckle like a noob.

The first gun I fired was a few months ago, it was a rifle of some sort, i forget what calibre and stuff, but it had a scope and bullets

My first shot was 1cm away from the center target. I'm just as deadly in RL as in game

ya, thats a somewhat advanced technique, but since cougar brought it up......like i said about a 1/16th of an inch difference at the end of the barrel being a half foot difference at the target. with a handgun, the way your finger sits on the trigger actually effects accuracy. you will see what i mean.....with finger placement problems you will usually shoot left or right of your intended target, depending on which side you are using too much finger.........you will see later when you want to fix it.....anyway.

And if you can't hit the target. Get a fully automatic weapon and just hold the trigger down and point the gun in the general direction of the target and you'll eventually hit something.

thats a good way to spend alot of money very quickly, but unfortunately no, you probably wont hit anything unless you know how to properly operate the firearm.

First of all - you HAVE to try it man!

uh well I started at the age of 7 I believe, with small arms.. 6 mm beretta and rifles (in comparison a M16 fires a 5.56mm round, but it packs a lot more punch because of a longer barrel and larger charge...)

anyways, it was a local indoor shooting range. I signed up, and started shooting.. officially I have no license to fire a gun, but I've shot with all kinds of guns/calibers.. because of my father. He is one of the best shotgun/rifle-marksman in the country, and have a whole room filled with trophies (both animals and awards), he has even been on the danish national team for more than 5 years in a row..
So yea I've shot a great deal with him, because he is an instructer too.. I have even shot some holes in the side of my computer case (seen here)
https://img172.imageshack.us/img172/723/17052007175vd5.jpg
I believe it was with one of my fathers 7.62'ers..
forget all of the pricey stuff you can mod your case with.  When I go to a LAN party I tend to draw a lot of attention with my "smashed up nuclear waste bucket" as I refer to it. It has some radioactive symbols cut out of it, and a hypnotizing green light in there along with the bullet holes. all the teen CS freaks always gather around my computer to hear how I've done it and such..

ANYWAYS!!, I think you should go to a local target range and try talking with them.. its really fun, and once you have tried it a few times you will be begging for bf2 and other fps to be more realistic.. or just go play PR like me..
When I'm going to study in the US for a semester we can go shoot together ol' buddy In denmark automatics/semi-automatics are illigal here, plus you can max have 3 rounds in the chamber at the time, which sucks.. I'd like to try a M16 or something like that when I get over there.. or a 9 mm pistol of some kind..
Oh yeah, as you might have guessed, I'm a gun freak too. I know the most types numbers and such by heart thats my thing..

EDIT: nice pic of a 9mm hollowpoint there Parker.. they are making hollowpoints illigal here too I believe.. too high speed and too much destructive power I think the argument was its so damn fun to shoot with them though.. small entry hole, back-side = gone

If you are open to opinions, you should get an SA10 from here for the house: http://www.non-lethal.com/. Incapacitation is better than killing to help avoid hurting unintended targets in the house. Close quarters are a pain for firing weapons. Not to mention that taking someone else's life is not too much fun either.

As far as going to the range, rifle ranges are much more fun than pistol ranges. A pistol does not compare to actually firing an M-60 or any other rifle. My .02 cents.

Isn't an M-60 a great big machine gun?

Anyway, TMo:  Go and have some fun.  I've used rifles (shooting at rabbits on my cousins farm) and shotguns (clay pigeon shooting, which makes for a great day out for a batchelor party).  Here in Ireland, that's about all I have the option of (handguns can be got legally, but with great difficulty), but I'll be in the US this summer and plan to swing by Las Vegas, where I'm hoping to give some handguns a go too.

Target shooting is a lot of fun, I have to say.  Target shooting with a rifle is remarkably simple, and with a small-calibre target rifle there's very little in the way of recoil or anything to deal with.  Clay-shooting is much more fun; I've only been a couple of times, but I've enjoyed it every time, even if after firing off 30 rounds or so I'm left with big red marks on my shoulder.

There has been good advice (or it sounds good anyway) from people who are obviously much more experienced with firearms than I am, but as a fellow noob in the world of shooting, my own advice would be:  take a buddy with you.  Find someone else who has no experience shooting, and set off together to find out what it's all about.  Having an experienced instructor is important, obviously, but if you have someone else along with you who's also new to it and also needs instruction, you'll both feel less awkward and nervous, and you'll have an easier time having some relaxed fun.

Plus, whoever gets the fewest hits has to buy the beers later on.

Size is relative. I was assigned one in the Army. It is a bear to carry around and to clean, but it is a blast to fire!

there is a lot of technique when firing a handgun, but just get used to the feel of it, honestly your probably not gonna hit shit the first couple of times you shoot.  to get accruate you need practice, and a lot of it.   when i first started shooting when i  was around 7 i started out a .22 worked my way through up to a .308, 30-06 and 7mm mag for rifles and 12 ga for a shotty.  i am very proficient with long guns and shot guns, i go trap shooting (clay pigeons) and have shot a few possibles in my time (25 for 25, 100% hit rate).  in the Marine Corps i was a 6th award expert, and we shot as far out as 500 yards, in all six times at the range to shoot for score at 500 yards i hit the bullseye 57 out of 60 times (i don't know what happend to the 3 stray bullets, shitty spotters i suppose). when i first shot a hand gun, i was so embarrasseed that i couldnt hold a good pattern that i wanted to stop right there on the spot, but my Dad told me that it would take time and practice to become good, and of course he was right.  after lots of practice i can finally say that i can hold my own with a hand gun, at 25 yards i can hold about 3.5" group, and the closer the target gets the tighter the pattern gets.  i usualy practice point shooting at distances of 3 ft to 15 ft, that is where most gun fights happen.  the 25 yard thing, well lets just say if you shot someone at that distance your going to jail for murder.
