I'm upgrading my crappy computer over the summer and these are the parts I will be buying, that is if you guys think it is a good buy.

-BFG 8800GTX 768MB video card (600MHZ core clock)
-Asus P5N-E 650i SLI mobo (LGA 775) ATX
-Kingston HyperX 2x1GB DDR2 800 RAM

Are those all future proof, as in fall 2007 future? I am thinking about getting a GTS overclocked to GTX stock for 100 bucks less, and buy a E6600 with that... would that be better than what I have up top? This is what I have now.

BFG 650W PSU
60GB HD
2GB DDR 400 RAM
ASRock motherboard (?)
7800GS Overclocked 256MB Video card
DVD drive
Intel Pentium D 805 (Smithfield) 2.66 GHz

Would my cpu be good with the P5N-E? Or should I get the E6600 and overclock it?

All help is appreciated!

E6600 and keep the 8800GTX.

Definatly, that's what I did.

I have the P5N-E, my only gripe is the lack of SATA connections (4), since my other board has 8 . If I had to buy another I most have chose something else for this reason.

But then again my burners are sata ... I'm kinda thinking that was a pointless purchase (sata opticals drives, not board).

Just pick up a cheap SATA controller. I got one for 20$ that has 4 SATA and 2 e-SATA.

You'll never get a rig that is future proof.

This says that there is going to be another price drop in Q3 this year.  A quad core for 266 bucks.  If that is going to around the corner, I may drop my E6300 and get one of those bad boys.

more then 2-cores is rediculous atm...name one piece of software that can use that? dual core is the sweet spot atm i think...and think how cheap they will be when the quadies drop? (drool)

yeah, no rig is future-proof, but it is easy to build one that is future-proof till next fall (only ~5 months). what you have there will be good...it should run crysis easily on at least high (maybe more ram/faster ram would be better, but...) also, HDD has a lot to do with system-speed/load times, so dont cheap-out on that front. RAID the way to go...2x WD 160GB 16mb cache, 7200rpm, SATA 3.0gb/s (@ $60/each) is a cheap/fast way to go.

QFT; the pace of technology will outdate whatever you buy in a couple of months.

I will do that then if the price does drop that low. Jspipsy (I think) I have 1 hard drive and 2 drives for cds and stuff, one is CD and one is DVD, that is only 3 right? I don't really know what a sata connector is but I think im on the right track. If it is not that great of a mobo, should I go with the EVGA 680i MOBO? Ok, if the prices go down on the Q6600 this is what I will buy...just 1 change.

8800GTX
Q6600
the mobo
ram
hard drive (maybe)

Holy shit, is that Q3 fiscally or seasonally?

A quad core would secure you for quite a while. Also an 8800GTX will handle most games at max for a long time. Even when the 8950 GX and GX2 come out the 8800 will still be an awesome GPU to have.

If you are an overclocker, E6420 > E6600.

True

Tho what you posted is about as good as you can get I think, bar DDR3 RAM

except for ddr3 scheduled to debut at ridiculously high prices and will probably not be worth the price at that time...better to get 4+GB 1000+ DDR2, lock it at DDR800 speeds and reduce the cas latency.

Why the hell would you want to do that?

Don't sacrifice frequency for latency, that's just silly. Run them at nice high frequency and overclock the CPU.

I have never overclocked anything. Ya I heard about the 8950GX and GX2 also, what were the rumored specs for it again? I just want to know, it would take me an eternity to have the money to buy it though.

Cerpin, do you recommend any particular HS/fan combos, or does Intel's stock cooler work plenty well for the 6420?

edit: And in that link that some dude posted about the Quad Cores getting a major price slash, is that Q3 in the fiscal year?!

Big ones!

It's hard to go far wrong with Zalman. Although I use a Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro 7 (since in the UK it's about 3x cheaper than equivilent Zalman ones, in the US it costs the same though - which I don't understand). Make sure you get decent thermal paste and that you clean the surfaces properly and apply the paste right.

The stock cooler is fine for limited OCing, but it'll get hot at high freqs under load.

Use the Intel thermal analysis tool to check your temps. It's the most accurate and you can put all sorts of loads on the CPU to see how hot it'll get when pushed.

Yeah u can - im pretty sure a $2mil Cray2 will keep u going for a fair few years as a gaming rig

My CPU is overclocked right now, at 2.66GHz. If I overclock it any higher its gonna crash or something, freak out. If I bought an E6600 and overclocked it to 2.8GHz and had the stock fan, would that be fine for it?

because of the FSB...getting ram that runs over 667MHz right now is a waste, assuming you run it in dual-channel.

You make no sense. Higher speed ram = win. I don't know what you're smoking.

Didn't Intel recently make a 128TB processor?

Exactly.

I dunno what you're talking about, because of the FSB? wtf? You need higher speed RAM because of the high FSBs, especially when OCing.
